History

The Hansa-Brandenburg W. 12 was a two-seater seaplane fighter that served the German Empire in the final years of the First World War. The model first flew in early 1917 and entered service shortly thereafter to improve upon the fundamental weaknesses of previous KDW seaplanes. Amazingly, the design stood the test of time and was in service with the Dutch Naval Air Service until it was retired in 1933.

A total of 181 prototypes were built over the life of the aircraft.

W. 12 Origins

The W.12 retains its origins from the Hansa-Brandenburg KDW seaplane that appeared in 1916. The type was also the design of Ernst Heinkel (his Heinkel company rose to prominence in the coming World War II), with around 60 examples built in total. The KDW itself is an improved modification of the land-based Hansa-Brandenburg DI.

One of the major flaws in the KDW design is the rear quarter defense. To this end, Heinkel revised its design and installed an aft cockpit for the observation gunner to protect the fuselage from enemy attacks from the rear. Special care was also taken to provide a better arc of fire as the gunner swung his machine gun along the trainable mount.

This resulted in the repositioning of the vertical fin from its dorsal position to its ventral position, giving the W.12 a completely unique and highly recognizable appearance, while also giving the tail gunner an unobstructed view of what was happening on its front and sides. After testing and evaluation, the W.12 entered service with the German Imperial Navy in mid-1917.

W. 12 Tour

The W.12 has the most unique look from almost every angle. The fuselage has more panels, and the internal structure has a large area of ??coverage. The engine has a protruding exhaust pipe at the very forward end of the fuselage that protrudes from the top of the engine mount.

The pilot sits in the back of the aft cabin, with the observer/gunner in the circular cockpit just behind him. Handles and steps granted to crew members entering/exiting large aircraft. The rear wing is raised slightly and the rear wing is down vertically.

The stabilizer is mounted on the very top edge of the tail of the fuselage. The fuselage itself is attached (by struts) to a pair of buoys for the required marine service (landing and take-off can be performed in the open sea, no runway length restrictions). The wings are in a two-wing layout, supported by parallel struts and proper wiring. The key to the wing's construction is its durable construction, which has allowed Heinkel to reduce its reliance on the support wires found in most contemporary biplane designs.

The basic structure is made of wood covered with fabric.

Engine, power and dimensions

The W.12 is powered by a Mercedes D.III inline 6-cylinder in-line piston engine rated at 160 hp. This provides a top speed of 99 mph, service is capped at 16,405 feet, and the range is 3 hours and 30 minutes. The W. 12 weighs 2,198 kb empty and 3,206 lb gross when fully loaded.

She has a wingspan of 36 feet 9 inches, a height of 10 feet 10 inches, and a barrel length of 31 feet 6 inches.

Armed

Standard weapons focus on a combination of offensive and defensive machine guns. Pilots can use LMG 08/15 series 7, 92mm aircraft machine guns in single or double platoons. These were fixed forward systems, operated by rotating propellers through breaker gears (an important German development during the war so pilots wouldn't shoot their own props). The rear spotter/gunner is in charge of a (trainable) Parabellum MG14 series machine gun mounted on his cockpit ring.

All in all, this arrangement gave the W. 12 excellent hunter qualities in attacking and tracking enemy targets, while also providing the crew with defensive measures in the rear.

Dutch look

The Netherlands got its first taste of the potential inherent in the German-designed W.12 in April 1918, when a single example was forced to make an emergency landing on Dutch soil (the Netherlands was neutral in the war) for the item Work). Dutch officials then gave an example of putting the man through an assessment process to decipher his merits. After the war, the Dutch government obtained a license to locally manufacture the W.12, which was done at the Van Berkel company in Rotterdam under the name "W-A".

The main difference between the Dutch and German models is the use of Mercedes-Benz engines. About 35 Dutch examples were produced in aircraft service until 1933.

Additional Notes

The German Navy's W. 12 model was called "C3MG". This model remained in front-line service until it was replaced by the larger and more successful Hansa-Brandenburg W. 19 in mid-1918.

On December 17, 1917, German Lieutenant Christiansen shot down a British airship (C-27) while flying a W.12.
