History

Before the outbreak of the American Civil War (1861-1865), engineer John Griffin designed a new, state-of-the-art 3 inch (76 mm) caliber field gun that later became one of the best field guns. Muzzle-loaded 3-customs ordnance rifle and uses a reinforced wrought iron barrel, which limits barrel breakage common on cast iron types.

Compared to contemporary muskets of similar form and function, this weapon is a respected battlefield weapon due to its relatively light yet robust construction and long combat range. Once it was available in the requisite quantity, the Federal Rifle could outperform their Confederate counterparts with lethal firepower and accuracy.

A prototype, then known as the "Griffin Gun" after its creator, was exhibited in 1854, and the design was subtly improved over the next few years. Griffin patented the gun's iron structure in December 1855. The U.S.

Department of Ordnance then tested it at Fort Monroe, Virginiaand found it to be reliable and accuratebut ordering it after the war seemed far from certain. In February 1861, the first mass production order for the Griffin gun was placed, and another contract was signed in July of the same year.

Its appearance is modern: it uses a strongly spoked wagon (drawn by a horse or other pack animal) with a barrel and mounting hardware and a towing arm. The barrel is a slender, uninterrupted monolith of iron consisting of multiple layers of wrought iron rods surrounding a cylindrical iron ingot. The spindle is drilled and pulled out, and the rifling helps greatly improve range accuracyup to 1,900 yards, depending on the ammunition used.

The result was a reliable barrel that wasn't prone to breakage, but was lighter than competing designs at the time - in fact, the entire part was light enough that riflemen could reposition the gun without much effort.

More than 1,000 of these guns were made for the Northern War, most of them from the Phoenix Steel Company of Phoenix, Pennsylvania. His accuracy was demonstrated at the Battle of Atlanta, a major federal victory in Georgia on July 22, 1864.

The Confederates supported the accuracy of this weapon in their writings and witness accounts, and the South respected this new weapon enough to try to replicate itthough their limited manufacturing capabilities could never match its quality, resulting in the original The replicas are quite poor. (further hampered by inferior ammunition).

These guns were also used at the Battle of Gettysburg in early 1863, when almost half of the existing federal guns were 3-inch ordnance rifles. Other notable battles include Antietam Fredericksburg.

The 3" Ordnance Rifle had a long and healthy career in the postwar world until the late 1880s, when more modern all-steel breech-loading alternatives replaced it. It was directly replaced by the 3" 2" rifled US Army The in-service Model 1885 field guns (details elsewhere on this page) and the remaining 3" ordnance rifles ended the days when they were converted to salutes or 3.2" breech-loaded field guns, keeping them viable for the foreseeable future The future of battlefield tools.
