History
The AMX-32 is a further development of the commercially successful French-built AMX-30 main battle tank. In addition to improving primary weapons, crew protection and internal components, the system is also intended to be an export product for customers who need more power than the AMX-30.
However, as no production orders were received, only two prototypes were eventually developed for the AMX-32.
The AMX-32 has two different main guns. The first prototype was equipped with the AMX-30's 105mm gun, while the second prototype was equipped with a more powerful 120mm gun.
In addition to this change, the AMX-32 features an improved armor design and side skirts to better protect critical systems and crew. The turret has been completely redesigned with a sharper slope, with a coaxial 20mm mount and the commander's 7.62mm machine gun.
Compared to its predecessor, the improvements in the fire control system are significant, enabling the AMX-32 to engage stationary/moving targets day and night, including laser rangefinders.
In the end, the AMX-32 was not implemented as the changes required an increase in overall weight, which negated any maneuverability improvements over the base AMX-30. The AMX-32 has never been produced outside of these two prototypes, and other options are already on the market for existing AMX-30 customers.
