History

The CM-11 is a Taiwanese military main battle tank (MBT) with a US-made M60 "Patton" MBT hull and a modified turret from the older US M48 "Patton" medium tank series (specifically the production M48H). composition). The M48 dates back to claims made during the Korean War (1950-1953) in 1951, and production began in 1952, before it was officially named in 1953. Production continued until 1959, with approximately 11,700 copies delivered.

Some time later, the M60 followed as the US Army's first main battle tank. It was launched in 1961 - some of which are still in use today - and more than 15,000 different variants have been produced.

The Taiwan Army started using M48 tanks under the M48A3 brand (ROC variant), these are the M48A1/M48A2 series tanks with most of the original equipment and performance to fit the rather limited range of 195 miles.

The Taiwan Army's CM-11 "Brave Tiger" was born in 1990 to upgrade its armored forces with the M48A2 turret and updated M60 Patton MBT hull. The turret is equipped with a 105mm main gun, advanced fire control system, stabilized sights, ballistic computer and thermal imager. Through this process, the tank is equivalent to the existing and updated M60 Patton system.

Combined with imaging and aiming systems and two-axis stabilization for target tracking and mobile shooting, accuracy is improved. Several machine guns are optionally mounted on top of the turret - the commander's cupola and cargo hatch - for local self-defense against infantry and air strikes, and there is a 7.62mm coaxial gun on the front of the turret. To bolster defenses, 12 smoke grenade launchers are mounted on the turret, which self-check the vehicle if necessary. Like the previous base M48, the CM-11 will be flown by a crew of four, including the driver (sitting in the forward center fuselage), the gunner, the loader and the vehicle commander. The commander's position is to the right of the turret, directly behind the gunner, and the loader to his left.

The base armor reached 143 mm in the most critical places, and the weight of the tank was close to 50 tons.

In terms of installed power, the tank is powered by a General Dynamics AVDS-1790-2C series 750 hp diesel engine. This gives the vehicle a maximum road speed of 30 mph on prepared surfaces.

Another variant of the CM-11 series came in the form of the "CM-12", which combined the FCS and weapons set of the earlier CM-11 model with the existing M48A3 tank with the engine compartment originally used for the M48/ Combination includes M48A1 stock. The range has been further reduced to just 126 miles.

January 2015 - CM-11 series MBTs have been shown to have some form of Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA) blocks installed around their hull and turret sections, undoubtedly increasing battlefield survivability to some extent - Especially considering improved tank ammunition and anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) systems from China.

Only the battlefield can tell how well the CM-11 performed in combat. Its design is largely based on Cold Was technology, and its 105mm main gun is nowhere near the new 120mm autoloader that the enemy will use.
