History
The Crotale anti-missile system can be mounted on various types of chassis and fire on land or water targets. The French Air Force, the Finnish Army and the French Navy are just a few of the users of this multidimensional system, which began its construction phase in 1967 and went into production in 1978.
It is an effective "friend or foe" network against incoming air threats, including cruise missiles. The Crotale missile has proven to be highly maneuverable for its role, capable of speeds in excess of Mach 3.5 and a range of up to 11 kilometers (6.8 miles).
Fire control uses multiple sensors with passive optics and radar to work with electronic countermeasures systems. The target detection and acquisition system is fully automatic for the fastest crew response time.
The highly adaptable system can be ported to a variety of chassis requirements, some of which can be seen on Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS), 6-wheel Armored Fighting Vehicles (AFV), and 4-wheel Armored Vehicles.
The Crotale "NG" ("Next Generation") variant becomes an upgraded production brand after its launch in Finland. Other brands include a Chinese reverse-engineered HQ-7 model that was then copied by the Iranians. Saudi Arabia operates the SICA "Shahine" R460 series. The Crotale Mk.
III is the latest in the Crotale series, which began testing around 2008 - a version capable of accurately attacking small drones.
