History of the cruiser tank Mk VIII Challenger (A30)

The Challenger Mk VIII cruiser was the British answer to the very real and deadly threat posed by German armor on the battlefields of World War II. The system is specifically designed - by upgrading the powerful 76mm main gun as a tank destroyer - although it will appear in limited numbers and will be replaced by the Sherman Firefly in terms of practicality and usability.

In total, only about 200 Challenger Mk VIII cruiser tanks were built from February 1943 to September 1944.

The Challenger Mk VIII Cruiser tank destroyer is based on the A27 design chassis. The newer design, known as the A30, was designed to use the heaviest German armor, as the current generation of British tanks apparently lacked the firepower to match.

This new design fits an impressive 17 lb (76 mm) main gun, using three Cromwells each. The A30 is now the Challenger Mk VIII cruiser when it goes into production.

While the A27's chassis was used, the A30's design proved to require some tweaking to guide and fire the main gun, so the hull was increased in length and width, and a new tower was built from the ground. Additionally, another road wheel was installed on both sides of the track to compensate for the extra weight.

As you can imagine, these changes directly affected the overall weight of the design, and the resulting turret gave the Challenger high status and made it a bigger target on any battlefield.

Additional standard armament includes a 7.62mm Browning machine gun for self-defense. The crew quarters are five, powered by a 600-horsepower Rolls-Royce Meteor engine. A total of 42 main battery projectiles can be carried on board.

Once in production, Challenger saw limited positive usage. Eventually, the design would give way to modified existing designs, such as the Sherman-based "Firefly" that many British tank crews endorsed.

In the end, the Challenger Mk VIII cruiser is just a stopgap until more accessible and efficient systems come online.
