History

The Enigma 8x8 Wheeled Armoured Modular Fighting Vehicle (AMFV) was developed by UAE Defence Technologies (EMT) to perform various battlefield roles for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Army and potential foreign customers. The country is no longer content to buy military commodities through the exports of the usual global players, but has slowly and quietly developed a domestic military-industrial complex to address pending internal needs.

One such effort is the Enigma, an 8-wheel, fully amphibious system with the necessary battlefield qualities of even the best Western products. A pilot form (prototype) was presented to UAE government officials during IDEX 2015 - the Army is considering the purchase of a large number of 8x8 vehicles, of which Enigma is a potential product.

Like other vehicles in this class, the Enigma has a durable armored hull structure on its 8-wheel chassis. The glacis boards are wide and well sloping for basic frontal ballistic protection. The rider maintains the front left position with the powerplant on the right. The special location of the engine in the fuselage allows for mid and rear for passenger seat and turret mounting. Electric doors at the rear of the hull provide the required entry/exit.

The bottom of the hull is dedicated for V-type lightning protection, and the tires have run-flat capability and real-time pressure control to adapt to the driving environment. As an amphibious vehicle, the Enigma is propelled through a water source using a system of two propellers mounted low on the rear of the fuselage. In addition to its fully welded armor protection system, the vehicle can also be used with decal armor.

Smoke grenade launchers for vehicle inspection, a complete digital battlefield management system (BMS), active defense suite, periscope and local cameras for situational awareness, and an NBC (nuclear, biological, chemical) suite also enhance survivability. Biological facilities include air conditioning and heating.

Driven by an American Caterpillar C13 diesel engine with an output of 711 hp. Steering on both front axles is servo-assisted.

As a multi-purpose modular AFV, the Enigma can be installed in a variety of turret systems, including the complete turret of the Russian BMP-3 series Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) (1 x 100mm main gun and 30mm coaxial automatic cannon and 1 x 7.62mm coaxial machine gun). Other proposed versions include a Fire Support Vehicle (FSV) with a 155mm howitzer and an anti-aircraft vehicle with an automatic cannon.
