G6 Marksman Story

The G6 Marksman is a self-propelled anti-aircraft gun (SPAAG) system that combines the chassis of a South African G6 6x6 wheeled self-propelled howitzer with a "Marksman" defense system consisting of 2 x 35-mm -Oerlikon automatic cannons and a Marconi radar system . With a fully rotating turret, the vehicle is capable of engaging incoming low-flying targets such as helicopters and attack aircraft. Its role on the battlefield is comparable to the ZSU-23-4 "Silka", the famous Soviet vehicle of the Cold War era.

The British G6 marksman vehicle uses three people (driver, gunner and commander) and carries 460 fragmentation shells and 40 anti-tank (AT) shells - the latter used against armoured land vehicles when suppressed. The vehicle is resistant to heavy caliber 14.5mm small arms fire and artillery jets of up to 155mm weapons. It comes with eight electric smoke grenade launchers to provide its own smoke screen.

Power is provided by an air-cooled 525 hp diesel engine, driving all three axles. Road speeds reach 50 miles per hour and the operating range is up to 430 miles.

The Marksman system was also installed on the chassis of the Soviet T-55Am in Finland to produce the "ltPsv 90" SPAAG series. They were powered by a 620 hp V-55 V12 diesel engine and retained the T-55's tracked undercarriage and torsion bar suspension.

While the Marksman was proposed on several other chassis - including the UK Centurion, Chieftain and Challenger 1 MBT chassis - the Marksman only existed in the above two forms.
