History of General Dynamics AVGP (Armored Vehicle, General)

AVGP ("Armored Vehicle, General Purpose") was added to the Canadian Army's inventory in 1976 to meet the 1974 requirement. Three cars were judged and the final winner was the Swiss-made MOWAG Piranha I (detailed elsewhere on this site) in a 6x6 wheel configuration.

In 1979, Local Production was granted and added the first Production Quality Units) role. Production of the three variants totaled 496 units.

A total of 195 Cougars were built, with a crew of three and two passengers aft. Its armament is a 1 x 76mm L23A1 turret main gun capable of firing a variety of ammunition from a coaxially mounted 1 x 7.62mm medium machine gun.

2 x 4 rows of smoke grenade launchers are installed for self-controlled movements.

A total of 274 prototypes were produced for the Grizzly, with a crew of 2, armed with 1 x 12.7mm Heavy Machine Gun (HMG) and 1 x 7.62mm MMG. 2 x 4 rows of smoke grenade launchers are also installed.

Huskey produced a total of 27 with 3 crew members and 6 passengers in the rear. Its weapons include 1 x 7.62 mm MMG and 2 x 4 smoke grenade launchers.

All models weigh in the 10.7 t range and are powered by 1 Detroit Diesel 6V53T two-stroke turbocharged 275 hp diesel engine. Featuring a full-suspension 6x6 wheel configuration, the vehicles have excellent off-road capabilities, and the built-in amphibious mass allows them to traverse water.

Road speeds can reach 100 kilometers per hour. Dimensions include a length of 5.97 meters and a width of 2.5 meters.

The series served in peacekeeping operations (as part of the United Nations) related to the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s. Furthermore, their exposure in this environment is limited. Efforts to modernize the fleet failed in the mid-2000s, and the fleet was decommissioned from front-line service.

The supplies have since been shipped to Africa for peacekeeping services in Sudan (served by local African crews).

In 1008-2009, Uruguay transitioned to purchasing cougars, grizzlies and huskies from the former Canadian army. The Cougar was retrofitted on site by FAMAE, and when it appeared, the turret was removed for use as an armored personnel carrier (APC).
