History
The HDS "Tigon" is a 6x6 wheeled armoured personnel carrier (APC) jointly developed by South Korea's Hanwha Defence Systems and Malaysia's AVP Engineering to meet the requirements of the Malaysian Army. Unveiled in early 2018 and trialled later this year (on Malaysian soil), the Tigon represents another intriguing global entry into the crowded wheeled combat vehicle market.
The vehicle's hull structure uses all-welded steel to protect against small arms fire and artillery "spray", while carrying bolted armor blocks for advanced protection, especially against rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs). Landmines and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in disputed areas. The 6x6 wheel configuration is used for maximum on- and off-road speeds, thanks in part to the large diameter wheels and double wishbone suspension system.
The two front axles are particularly well spaced from the single rear unit. The hull uses board side panels with a flat roofline and a flat, sloping glacis board at the bow. A Remote Weapon Station (RWS) armed with a 7.62mm General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) can be placed above the fuselage.
Water jets are mounted on the underside of the fuselage's stern, enabling the vehicle to traverse the water on its own power - reaching speeds of 8.5 km/h.
Inside is a standard operator of three people - driver, commander and gunner - typical of this vehicle. Up to 8 combat-ready infantry can be transported in a protected manner and have access to blast-proof seats. A field of view block for the three crew members allows seeing out of the vehicle in the "buckled" state.
Track mission systems in real time with color displays and gauges. A central tire pressure system is provided for the driver to dynamically adjust to the terrain being driven.
Power comes from an American 6-cylinder 525 hp Caterpillar turbo diesel engine mated to an American Allison 4500SP series electronically controlled automatic transmission. The transmission offers six forward gears and one reverse.
Overall, the APC has a road speed of up to 100 km/h and a range of up to 1,000 km.
