History

The LARS-2 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) vehicle is an evolution of the 1969 LARS-1 system. Introduced in 1980, it operated the crew using the chassis of a MAN 6x6 wheeled truck with an armoured cab, while the dual 18-round position transmitter unit remained at the rear of the vehicle.

Compared to the original Magirus-Deutz Jupiter range, MAN trucks offer improved reliability and maneuverability, and a new Fire Control System (FCS) with radar range has been introduced to improve response time and accuracy within range. There is also broader support for new missile warhead types, including HE-FRAG (high explosive, fragmentation), SUB-MUN (SUBMUNitions), AT (anti-tank) and Rauch.

Like the LARS-1, the LARS-2 remains stationary while firing. Its launcher is maneuverable, with inherent traversal and altitude range. The support legs at the rear of the fuselage were lowered to support the vehicle when launching the missile.

Tubes can be cleared in seconds and reloaded in 15 minutes. A supply vehicle followed the deployed LARS-2 unit and delivered hundreds of rockets. MAN trucks are powered by a liquid-cooled V-8 diesel engine with output between 260 and 320 horsepower.

The road speed reaches 100 km/h and the cruising range is up to 480 km. The total weight is 17,480kg.

The "LARS" in the name stands for "Light Artillery Rocket System", which translates to "Light Artillery Rocket System" in German. The LARS-2 system replaced the LARS-1 vehicle, but was abandoned in 1998 in favor of the American M270 MLRS tracked vehicle.
