M93 Fox Story

The M93 "Fox" is an outstanding German Rheinmetall TPz 1 "Fox" 6x6 wheeled vehicle developed by the US Army. The M93 is primarily used to monitor, collect and process battlefield samples related to biological, chemical, radiological and nuclear contamination. Fox first appeared (borrowed) to the German government and was operated by U.S. Army personnel during Operation Desert Storm (referred to as "XM93" and "XM93E1") due to concerns that the enemy might use chemical weapons during a coalition offensive.

The United States initially commissioned 48 vehicles until the Gulf War prompted the German government to service a total of 60 vehicles.

At the heart of the M93 system is its mass spectrometer, which is used to collect air and soil samples for validated analytical processes. The vehicle itself features a three-axle, six-wheel arrangement that provides excellent ground clearance, off-road cruising and battlefield protection (from small arms fire).

The crew consisted of three, with the pilot and commander in the forward fuselage section, although the M93 production brand called for four.

The original vehicle was under the base M93 designation. It was followed by the M93A1 brand, which reduced the crew to just three. The A1 model also introduces the M21 remote chemical reagent alert system and autosampler for enhanced detection.

Modernization programs help Fox's fleet adapt to new modern air and ground threats.

The vehicle has an operating weight of 17 tons, a length of 22.25 feet, and a height of 8 feet. The 6x6 wheel arrangement is powered by a 320 hp Mercedes-Benz OM 402A Series liquid-cooled V8 diesel engine, enabling the vehicle to reach road speeds of 65 miles per hour.
