History

The PHL03 is based on the Russian BM-30 "Smerch" Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS), which was introduced into PLA service before the competing A-100. The vehicle was then further developed into the 8x8 wheeled "AR-1" series and released in 2009 with enhanced tactical capabilities and support for missile munitions.

Several advanced versions of the AR-1 have since been added, and one of the export variants - designated A-100E (AR-1A) - is being delivered to Pakistan.

The AR-1 still supports 300mm battlefield missiles with variable warheads and, like other MLRS, is designed for area saturation of enemy territory. The heavy-duty wheeled 8x8 chassis forms the launch vehicle portion of the complete MLRS system, with the launch vehicle components located at the rear of the chassis. The crew of four consisted of members living in the forward cabin. The launcher unit can be trained to such an extent that the vehicle does not have to turn completely in the firing direction. Hydraulic recoil legs on the rear side of the truck are lowered for stability prior to launch - the launch takes just a few seconds to deflate the entire launcher.

Ten launch tubes form the basic building block of a 300mm rocket launcher.

The AR-1A has been introduced as a modular variant of the original AR-1 series, allowing the entire launcher to be replaced in the field with an accompanying support vehicle. In this way, each launch tube does not have to be reloaded individually, giving the crew a significantly higher rate of fire.

NORINCO followed with the AR-2, which retains the modularity of the AR-1A but supports an extended range of up to 130 kilometers. An AR-3 form also emerged, supporting 370mm battlefield missiles while retaining support for launching earlier 300mm missile types.

In the case of the 370mm launcher unit, the launch tube is the fourth.

The AR-1 series is a relatively new addition to the PLA's inventory and should maintain a healthy lifespan. Export sales could also boost its global profile as it competes with more expensive Russian products.
