History
The PGZ-04 is an upgraded version of the earlier PGZ-95 series of self-propelled integrated air defense (AA) air defense systems in service with the People's Liberation Army (PLA). Designed, developed and built locally, the vehicle features a more powerful short-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) and an automatic rapid-fire (RF) cannon integrated around the central turret component. The tracked nature of the vehicle allows it to traverse land with sufficient ease while keeping pace with the main mechanized forces.
The PGZ-04 is deployed alongside the PLA's mechanized units as an airspace deterrentespecially against low-flying threats such as attack helicopters.
The vehicle was designed by the Northwest Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering in Xianyang, Shaanxi, China.
The undercarriage is conventional track and wheel drive with six twin tire wheels on one side of the hull, a front drive sprocket and a rear track idler. No orbital deflection rollers. The engine is in the front right, the driver is in the front left, and the commander is in the rear.
The turret is located aft of the top of the fuselage, has 360-degree rotation capability, and is built into the gun and missile components. Two rows of four (a total of eight) smoke grenade launchers are located at the base of the turret for self-defense.
The CLC-1 S-band pulsed Doppler search and track radar system (11 km range) is mounted on top of the turret. The fire control computer, laser rangefinder, TV tracking camera and electro-optical (EO) guide are part of the overall structure of the system.
The rear of the hull is square and provides a square access door for the crew of three.
The diesel powered motor unit enables a road speed of 53 km/h and a range of 450 km. The car is 6.71 meters long, 3.2 meters wide, 3.4 meters high, and weighs 22,500 kilograms.
Standard armament includes 4 x 25mm autocannons and 2 x 2-barreled QW-2 Short-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) launchers. Two cannons and two missile tubes were mounted on either side of the turret part.
Coupled with its search and track equipment, the PGZ-04 is optimized for deterrence from low-altitude aircraft.
The latest PLA version of the production model "PGZ-04A".
