NORINCO PLL-09 (Type 09)

History

The modern Chinese Army uses a large number of armored vehicles, both wheeled and tracked. In the former category, it exists in the form of the PLL-09 - referred to by the People's Liberation Army (PLA) as the "Type 09".

The vehicle is based on the chassis and running gear of the proven multi-faceted ZBL-08 (Type 08) 8x8 wheeled infantry fighting vehicle (IFV), with the main difference being a heavier rotatable turret with a powerful 122mm howitzer. The vehicle can also be equipped with a 155mm howitzer to further enhance long-range fire support.

Like other vehicles in the family, the PLL-09 is easy to drive off-road thanks to its 8x8 wheel configuration, oversized run-flat tires and high ground clearance. The three crew members are dressed in light to medium armor that helps defend against small arms fire and shrapnel. This is acceptable as the vehicle is not intended for frontline combat with direct line of sight.

The real value of this system lies in firing through indirect action with no line of sight behind the line of fire.

retains most of the form and function of the original ZBL-08. A diesel powered engine drives the type at a speed of 100 km/h and a range of 800 km. A semi-automatic transmission system is connected to the engine. The truck is amphibious, allowing it to traverse water sources without preparation.

The howitzer weapon is located on the front of the 360-degree rotating turret that surrounds the rifleman and commander. The weapon is fully stabilized and features an integrated recoil mechanism and multi-slotted muzzle brake. Smoke grenade launchers can be seen along the sides of the turret, helping the vehicle provide its own smoke to protect the enemy's line of sight.

An optional 12.7mm heavy machine gun (HMG) can be mounted on top of the turret to protect it from low-flying aircraft.

PLL-09 is common in PLA Army operations, i.e. in field exercises to train personnel and support propaganda efforts.
