Otokar ARMA Story
Turkey's Otokar sells its Modular Wheeled Armored Fighting Vehicle (AFV) "ARMA" to cover a variety of battlefield roles including troop transport, infantry support and convoy security. Central to the design is its tactical flexibility and wide selection of weapons, from basic anti-infantry measures to more advanced and capable vehicle stopping systems.
In addition to the military value given, ARMA can also play a role in government security, special police and humanitarian/peacekeepers around the world. The 24-tonne vehicle will be available in two different body styles - a 6x6 wheel arrangement and an 8x8 wheel arrangement, which increases the body length and adds an extra bogie.
Depending on the model, the operator consists of 2 to 3 people and can accommodate up to 8 to 10 passengers (depending on the model) and is protected. Armor protects against small arms fire and artillery jets, while the monocoque steel hull protects the truck's more vulnerable underbelly - giving the ARMA survivability similar to Western MRAP (mine and ambush) vehicles.
Dimensions include a barrel 6.4m long, 2.7m wide and 2.2m high - which can be carried in the belly of a C-130 Hercules transport aircraft or similar.
6x6 models are available in basic form as Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC), Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV), Command Post (CP), Ambulance, Reconnaissance Vehicle and Driving Trainer.
The base unarmed model is in 6x6 wheel form, offering a better turning radius (compared to the 8x8 sister design) while maintaining maneuverability and ground clearance. Eight smoke grenade launchers are installed in two rows of four launchers on the roofline at the rear of the fuselage.
ARMA 6x6 CBRN is another 6x6 wheel shape. This works in conjunction with a 7.62mm trainable machine gun on the gunner's station trunnion mount to provide light suppression capabilities. The ARMA 6x6 OMTTZA mounts a 12.7mm Heavy Machine Gun (HMG) at the gunner's (shielded) position and carries 8 smoke grenade launchers.
The 12.7mm fit can be replaced with a 7.62mm caliber Medium Machine Gun (MMG) or a fully remote-controlled Remote Weapon Station (RWS) with a 7.62mm machine gun. An auxiliary socketed 7.62mm weapon could be mounted at the rear of the hull, but provided little protection for the gunner.
The 8x8 wheeled model fulfills similar and broader battlefield roles: APC, IFV, mortar carrier, mobile weapons carrier, air defense/airspace denial, and CP.
The ARMA 8x8 TZA houses a powerful 20mm automatic cannon in a fully rotating turret. A coaxial 7.62mm machine is mounted above the gun, and eight smoke grenade launchers make the vehicle self-defense. Advanced optics provide the crew with excellent situational awareness. The ARMA "MIZRAK-30" pairs a more powerful 30mm automatic cannon with a coaxial 7.62mm machine gun and smoke grenade launcher.
An armored kill model with a turret-mounted 105mm main gun and a towed main gun was also shown.
To date, Otokar ARMA counts the Bahraini Army as one of its operators. The country acquired 73 cars in the 2010 deal. The United Arab Emirates announced in 2017 a contract for the conversion of 700 military vehicles under the name "RABDAN". The truck weighs 28 tons when finished and equipped.
