History
The Transportpanzer 1 (TPz 1 or "Fuchs") was a 6-wheeled armoured personnel carrier designed for West German needs. The request focuses on the development and production of a similar full line of armored vehicles with interchangeable systems and components. Not only is this a cost-sensitive move, but this mindset allows operators to reuse parts from damaged or wrecked vehicles in new vehicles in need of repair.
The vehicle family consists of various 4x4, 6x6 and 8x8 designs, with the 6x6 design appearing as the TPz 1 in 1979.
The design of the TPz 1 is dominated by six large wheels. The hull roof is flat, while the rest of the hull has various angled armor plates. The TPz 1 system is fully amphibious, powered by twin propellers hidden in the rear lower hull.
Power steering is used for the two frontmost wheelsets, and patch armor is available as an option for added occupant protection.
Lynx has been designed from the outset to be a highly adaptable platform, which means the weapon system is not limited to the standard 7.62mm machine gun configuration, or even the standard APC role. Other weapon loads may include 81mm or 120mm mortars and anti-tank missile systems (including MILAN and TOW missile launchers).
Weapons are at the discretion of the customer, as is the intended use on the battlefield. Fuchs can also be customized to fulfill the role of combat ambulance, engineering vehicle, reconnaissance vehicle, armoured rescue vehicle or infantry fighting vehicle (IFV).
The US Army uses the Luchs NBC model, known as the M93 Fox, while the UK also uses the Luchs NBC model. Israel received several models of Luchs infantry fighting vehicles during Operation Desert Storm (1991), and Venezuela purchased as many as 10 of these vehicles from Germany in 1983.
