History
The S-23 was a heavy artillery piece intended for use in Europe as the Cold War heated up. It was available to Soviet allies, and the operations were trained by members of the Soviet army. The massive weapon uses a crew of 16 and is towed by an AT-T crawler tractor that also carries the crew's supplies and some ammunition.
The ammunition is large and heavy, weighing 84.09 kg (185.4 lb) for the HE cartridge and 97.7 kg (215.4 lb) for the concrete piercing cartridge. The gun can also be used to fire 0.2 kt nuclear bombs.
A Soviet heavy artillery brigade had 12 S-23 guns; the division's firepower and the number of 155mm and 130mm howitzers were staggering.
The S-23 had an 8.8 m (28 ft 10.46 in) barrel. To reduce the overall length, the barrel can be moved and attached to a twin-wheel slide at the tail. The car is a standard split, with two twin tires in the front and a dolly in the rear, which also has two tires.
The rate of fire is 1 round per minute, with 1 round of continuous fire every 2 minutes. HE rounds have an effective range of 30,400 meters (33,245 yards), while rocket-boosted rounds have an effective range of up to 43,800 meters (47,900 yards).
