History of Skoda PA-III (OA vz. 27)

The Czechs started working on the design and development of armored vehicles after the end of the First World War (1914-1918) almost as soon as their army was assembled. There were several notable attempts, including the PA-II "Turtle" that led to PA-III, also known as "OA vz. 27". The car entered service in 1927 and became part of the Czech inventory when the Germans joined in 1939.

The stock was used by Nazi Germans as well as Romanian and Slovak armies before the end. The last recorded information on the series was in 1944, when much information was either scrapped or destroyed. A total of 16 cars were produced, including a prototype based on 1925-27 design work.

It was built at the legendary Skoda factory in Czechoslovakia.

The vehicle weighs 6.6 tons when built, measures 5.35 meters long, 1.95 meters wide and 2.6 meters high. It has a crew of 5 and is equipped with 2 x 7.92mm Schwarzlose MG vz. A 07/24 series machine gun (water-cooled) serves as the main armament of the roof turret and 1 x 7.92mm ZB vz. 26 series machine gun (water-cooled) is mounted on a trainable mount facing the stern.

Armor protection is 5.5mm thick, and power comes from a single Skoda 4-cylinder petrol engine mounted at the very front of the design. In a four-wheel arrangement, both axles are suspended. It has a range of up to 250 kilometers at road speeds of up to 35 kilometers per hour.

Like other Czech car designs, OZ vz. The 27 has two driver positions (one front and one rear), allowing the vehicle to travel in either direction without having to turn the car completely - saving critical time in a hasty escape. Each wheelset can be steered according to the driver's position in control at the time. This two-man position debuted in early PA-I production vehicles and has been a distinguishing feature of Czech armored vehicles ever since.

The steel inner frame was used to support the riveted armor. Crew access is through flanking doors and hatches mounted on top of the turret. Correspondingly, viewing slots cut into the armor at various points around the hull to provide some basic situational awareness.

In many ways, OA vz. 27 is intended as an improvement over the PA-I and PA-II family of vehicles, each with their specific limitations. The newer product promises to be budget- and production-friendly and compact, while retaining many of the great features of previous designs.

Maintenance has been improved, as has crew reliability and comfort, while the machine gun is equipped with an optical sight for accurate long-range fire. Still, the ship was tipped the wrong way and considered overweight for the powerplant installed and intended role.

Manufacturing costs are also a disadvantage, which results in limited yields. - 15 cars follow a prototype.

A In actual use, the car shows good performance in terms of reliability. It reinforces part of the Czech Army's existing cavalry and armored regiments, and early deployment enables them to carry out counterinsurgency missions. Then there are the border issues with Hungary and Poland, OA vz. No.

27 was commissioned as a security guard and Slovakia declared independence from Czechoslovakia in March 1939, causing three carriages to flee to Romania (two were later destroyed in an Allied air raid in 1944) and three to newly formed Slovakia , they are there for training. At least nine are known to have been occupied by the Nazis who conquered Bohemia-Moravia, most likely for training if not for local security.
