Proven tank design It is common practice to form larger vehicle families with proven chassis and operating experience. This helped produce the TOS-1 (aka "TOC-1"), which used the popular T-72 Main Battle Tank (MBT) chassis as the basis for the Multiple Rocket Launch System (MLRS). Multiple rocket launchers were used as out-of-range indirect fire weapons, usually attached to artillery regiments to provide significant firepower.
Field missiles have had a tactical and psychological impact on enemy forces for generations and continue to this day. As a result, many modern militaries stock special vehicles such as MLRS.
In 1988, the Omsk Transmash Design Bureau of the former Soviet Union led the design of the vehicle. The shotgun bag is mounted on the traverse bracket. The vehicle retains the original tank's three-person crew and weighs 100,000 pounds. Dimensions include a barrel length of 9.5 meters, a width of 3.6 meters, and a height of 2.22 meters. Power is provided by a standard 840-horsepower V-84 diesel engine.
Performance specs include 37 mph and a maximum range of 340 miles.
The multiple launcher pod initially received 30 launch tubes in the TOS-1M variant. It was later reduced to 24 in the TOS-1A upgrade with a 3 x 8 tube arrangement.
The rockets have a caliber of 220 mm and can carry different types of warheads to attack fortifications, light armored vehicles and open-air troops. The vehicle is supplied by a pair of matching TZM-T (KrAZ-255B) trucks that have been specially adapted for missile resupply missions.
Pilot vehicles were operationally evaluated during the latter part of the 1988-1989 Soviet-Afghan War (1979-1989) and found them to be useful short- and medium-range offensive weapons. Their development has been "closer to the vest" as the car was not really shown to the public until 1999 and has been seen at military parades ever since.
Production started in 1988 and seems to continue to this day (2015).
TOS-1 successfully weathered the post-Soviet defense budget crisis and served in the modern Russian army, which allowed it to see more combat operations, as seen during the Battle of Grozny (1999-2000 cases were) Against Chechen troops. There are also some foreign operators, these are former Soviet satellite states and Cold War customers - Azerbaijan, Iraq and Kazakhstan - although not operating the TOS-1 series in the same numbers as the Russians.
In 2001, the Russian Army adopted a modernized and improved version of the original TOS-1M, the aforementioned TOS-1A. Changes to the base design include reducing the number of launch tubes used, installing a new ballistic computer, and increasing the engagement range to 3.7 miles.
Iraqi TOS-1 vehicles were not deployed until 2014, and their firepower was used against ISIS elements during the October attack on Jurf Al Sakhar. These are updated TOS-1A systems.
