History of the Urals typhoon
In line with the global trend towards MRAP (Mine Resistant, Ambush Resistant) vehicles, the Russian Army has adopted various designs in its Typhoon program launched in 2010. The joint venture has produced strong candidates from various groups including KAMAZ and Ural, whose products were only launched in 2014.
The Ural Typhoon is more traditional in its design layout, while the Kamaz product is more practical - although both offer excellent protection against small arms fire, shrapnel, mines and roadside bombs, as well as rocket-propelled grenades ( RPG) attack.
The Ural Typhoon features a 6x6 wheel arrangement with the engine at the front, the cab right behind and the cabin at the rear. The wheels are run-flat and distributed on the front axle, and the rear pairing with suspension is distributed to all six wheels. Power comes from a 450-horsepower JAMZ-5367 series turbodiesel engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission system.
Range is up to 1,120 miles and road speeds are up to 65 mph.
Standard operator is 3 people, additional seating can accommodate up to 16 people. A rectangular door at the rear of the cabin provides quick access to the exterior, and weapons ports allow passengers to use their personal weapons for combat if necessary. All windows provide ballistic resistance up to 14.5mm AP rounds or blast force from an 8kg source. The high ground clearance of the chassis provides additional protection for the truck under mines and aids when traversing water or rough terrain.
The roof supports the Remote Weapon System (RWS) for medium/heavy 7.62mm or 14.5mm machine guns.
Currently (2016) there are two main models of the Ural Typhoon series - 63055 with 14 passengers and 63059 with 16 passengers.
