The S-500 "Prometey" (55R6M "Triumfator-M") anti-aircraft missile system is the latest long-range air defense system available from the Russian standard military industry get. Developed by defense contractor Almaz-Antey, the mobile surface-to-air missile (SAM) system has a range of between 300 and 400 miles and is capable of dealing with a wider range of airborne threats at extreme ranges.

It is a complementary design to the existing, operational S-400 "Triumf" (SA-21 "Growler") long-range wheeled weapon system currently in circulation with Russian allies (i.e. China and Turkey), and its intended successor It's the older S-300 (SA-10 "Grumble") system from the late Cold War.

Work on the new model was recorded in the second half of the 2000s, with the production phase tentatively scheduled for 2014. Delivery is scheduled for 2017. However, delays in the complex missile program ultimately pushed its entry into the next decade.

In addition to its inherent ability to search, track and strike aircraft/air targets from a distance, the S-500 system has anti-ballistic missile capabilities and is said to be able to repel hypersonic weapons.

The S-500 designation covers the complete weapon system, which includes various components in addition to the wheeled missile carrier, but also the critical radar unit. The launch vehicle is a 77P6 10x10 truck with four large rockets mounted on its rear.

These include the 55K6MA and 85Zh6-2 Command Post (CP) sections, as well as the 91N6A(M) Battle Management Radar (BMR) mounted on the 8x8 vehicle chassis. Also installed are 96L6-TsP acquisition radar units (on 10x10 military trucks), 76T6 multi-mode engagement radar units (on 8x8 trucks) and 77T6 engagement radars (on 10x10 wheeled trucks).

Together, these components form a robust S-500 suite that provides critical air defense/air deterrence for critical installations and areas.

Heading into mid-2021, Russian President Vladimir Putin himself commented that the year-long S-500 missile program was nearing completion and hinted that it should enter service in 2021 or 2022. As a land-based variant, the S-500 will also be developed as a carrier-based anti-aircraft missile platform for the Russian Navy.
