History of Admiral Lazarev (Frunze)

The Frunze battlecruiser is a product of the Cold War era and belongs to the Kirov class of cruisers. Although she held the expected role for many years, she later changed her name to Admiral Lazarev after 1992. Although traditionally classified as guided-missile cruisers, Frunze and her Kirov-class ships are also known as battlecruisers for their long range and firepower.

Along with the aircraft carrier, the Frunze and her associated class of warships are among the largest ocean-going vessels on the water today.

The Frunze is powered by twin KN-3 PWR nuclear reactors, which together with twin steam boilers feed both shafts. Top speeds can reach more than 30 knots, and the nuclear reactors provide essentially unlimited range, making them a major rival to Western nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. Originally designed to hunt down and destroy NATO and U.S. submarines, the Frunze has since become a full-fledged warship.

Their weapons include various cannons, torpedoes, rockets and missiles.

Frunze's primary weapon is her 20 x P-700 Granit anti-ship missiles, which are stored in a forward "missile farm". In addition, there are about 128 SA-N-8 surface-to-air missiles for air defense. This is further supported by an additional 96 S-300PMU surface-to-air missiles for additional containment threats. The SA-N-8 Gecko system further ensures the survivability of the vessel as 44 types are carried on board. Missiles can be fired from dual RBU-1000 and RBU-12000 for close-range anti-ship/surface-to-surface work.

Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) support is provided by batteries of 8 x 30mm/L60 AK-630 anti-aircraft Gatling systems. Also includes 10 x torpedo tubes for connecting 533mm type.

The profile of the Frunze consists mainly of a high mast set amidships and a secondary and shorter mast directly aft. Her superstructure occupies most of her midship and stern area, while the bow contains the large number of missile launch ports needed for most of her long-range arsenal.

The lodgings of the crew totaled more than 700 sailors, officers and a small number of pilots. Her air force is represented by three Kamov Ka-27 "Helical" or Ka'25 "Hormonal" anti-ship/anti-submarine helicopters, stored in a hangar below deck.

Frunze's onboard systems include sonar, fire control, navigation and search radar.

At the time of writing, Admiral Lazarev (former Frunze) is awaiting return to service after a stint in Limbo. Of course, this is directly related to the budget constraints faced by Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union. In any case, it is foreseeable that Admiral Lazarev will be active in the resurgent Russian military movement.

Their main area of ??activity is the Pacific Ocean.

Admiral Lazarev has been retired since 1999. It's still in Abbek Bay.
