History of Ammiraglio di Saint Bon

Ammiraglio di Saint Bon was incorporated into Regia Marina (Italian Navy) at the turn of the century, before the First World War and other Italian campaigns. She was classified as a "Predreadnought" battleship after the introduction of the HMS Dreadnought to the Royal Navy shocked the industry. Introduced in 1906, the HMS Dreadnought rewrote the concept of the cannon battleship and was delivered at a higher rate than its contemporaries. Therefore, all previous battleships were called "pre-dreadnought" battleships and were more or less obsolete with the arrival of the HMS Dreadnought.

Ammiraglio di Saint Bon was the first (leading) of the two in the class, and her sister became Emanuele Filiberto in 1901. She was launched on April 29, 1897, and completed on May 24, 1901. On February 1, 1901, she officially entered service.

When completed, the Ammiraglio di Saint Bon had a displacement of 10,700 tons, a length of 367 feet, a beam of 69 feet, and a draft of 25 feet. Her propulsion system consisted of 12 cylindrical boilers that powered a triple expansion steam engine while driving 2 shafts rated at 14,300 hp. Under ideal conditions, the maximum speed is 18 knots and the maximum range is 5,500 nautical miles.

Her crew consisted of 557 officers and was drafted into the army. Armor protection includes nearly 10 inches at the waistband and 2.75 inches registered on the deck. Both the turret and the conning tower are protected by 9.8-inch armor plates. The turrets were given up to 5.9 inches of armor.

For her time, she proved to be a well-armored ship.

The shape of the Ammiraglio di Saint Bon consists of a single centralised superstructure with a wide hull design, usually tapered at both ends. A mast is located amidships, separating the two funnels.

The main guns were mounted in the front and rear turrets, with smaller guns mounted around the superstructure.

The heart of any warship remains its armament, and Ammiraglio di Saint Bon's did not disappoint. Her main unit is the 4 x 10 in (254 mm)/40 main gun mounted on the front and rear turrets, with good combined power when launching broadside attacks. This is supported by 8 x 6" (152mm) / 40 guns, which are also bearable.

It is equipped with 8 x 4.7"/40 guns for additional firepower, melee by 8 x 2.2" 6lb (57mm)/43 guns and 2 x 1.5" (37mm) guns from Ammiraglio di Saint Bon with 4 x 17.7 " (450mm) torpedo tube for engaging surface ships at a distance below the waterline. Like their armor protection, the Ammiraglio di Saint Bon used considerable firepower in their time.

When Ammiraglio di Saint Bon was commissioned, she became the pride of the Italian fleet and served for over twenty years. As part of Marina Reggia's 3rd Division, it fought against the Ottoman Empire during the Italian-Turkish War (1911-1912), which proved to be a victory for Italy and eventually led to the formation of oil-rich Libya. After the war, the ship's destination was a scrapyard until the First World War (1914-1918) began to change the plans of all European powers. Pushed back into service in the Italian Navy, Ammiraglio di Saint Bon took a defensive stance during the conflict in Venice, with Italy eventually siding with the Allies.

Beginning in April 1916, she was relocated as needed to where her weapons were best suited for defense. After the war, Ammiraglio di Saint Bon spent her days in relative anonymity and was officially removed from the Naval Register in June 1920.

This time, instead of escaping the scrap dealer's torch, she was dismantled and sold after her weapons and vital supplies had been removed.
