ARA Espora (P-41) History

The modern Argentine Navy is just a shell of its predecessor, afflicted by a lack of adequate funding for decades, and Argentina's growing economic woes are only made worse. Even so, the service remains stagnant and is available for both men and women. Active assets include the Espora class, initially purchased in batches of six, including Espora, Rosale, Spiro, Parker, Robinson and Gomez Roca.

The series offered services from 1985 to 2002, but today (2018) less than half of the courses are known to be available.

The group is part of a larger modernization program for the Argentine Navy that went into the 1980s to help replace former U.S. Navy WWII-era ground fighters. However, the subsequent defeat of the Argentines by the British Navy during the 1982 Falklands War severely undermined the initiative. The six frigates, identified as frigates by some sources, were based on the original Portuguese warship design known as the "Joao Coutinho", which later evolved into the design standard "MEKO 140A16", which is essentially a scale down of the larger "MEKO 360" ed. "series of spoilers.

The purpose of these ships is to perform a coastal defense role against ships and submarines (but also maritime law enforcement and fishing duties), so they have compact dimensions, including a fairly shallow draft of only 10.9 feet. Total length reaches 299 feet and width is 36 feet.

With a displacement of 1,560 tons under load, the squad is led by her main ship, ARA Espora. The Espora, named after Tomas Espora, was built by local Argentine shipyard Rio Santiango. Her keel was laid on 10 March 1980 and launched on 23 January 1982.

However, the aforementioned Argentine involvement in the Falklands delayed the ship's commissioning until September 4, 1985 - well after the war ended.

Powered by 2 SEMT-Pielstick 16PC 2-5 V400 marine diesel engines driving twin axles under the stern, the vessel can travel at 27 knots for a range of up to 4,000 nautical miles. There are about 93 specialists on board.

Armament consists of a 76mm OTO-Melara deck gun with turret in position "A", a 40mm Bofors automatic cannon in position "B" and another 40mm gun mounted aft. In addition, 2 x .50 caliber heavy machine guns can be mounted for close-range air defense/anti-ship operations. 2 x 324mm ILAS-3 triple torpedo tubes were installed to deal with maritime threats, but the boat's primary armament became 4 MM.38 "Flying Fish" anti-ship missile launchers, giving the ship the dangerous ability to fly long-range over the sea .

The shape of the warship is mostly traditional: the foredeck is relatively short and is equipped with a 76mm main gun and turret. In the stepped part of the hull superstructure, the first 40 mm automatic cannon was found (the second was located above the stern). The bridge takes its usual position on the superstructure in front and proposes a double mast approach.

The smoke funnel is closed and has a flat design. A helipad was installed to support a light helicopter.

In addition to the general patrol duties of the Argentine Navy, ARA Espora conducted joint Allied exercises. Problems with the machines were discovered in October 2012, delaying their participation in such events.

In May 2016, she was seriously injured when she collided with an oil tanker off the coast of her home port of Puerto Belgrano.
