History
The Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy submarine force is planning the Type 096 ballistic missile submarine. The ship is intended as a delivery vehicle for the over-range collection of a large number of ballistic missiles.
It's known to be nuclear powered, giving it essentially unlimited range, has the latest in acoustic damping technology to make it quiet, and carries the latest advanced sensors and processing systems. In addition to its ballistic missile arsenal (about 24 missiles), there should be standard bow torpedo tubes to handle homing torpedoes and cruise missiles.
The current model shows a submarine form of conventional construction and layout. The hull is rounded and smooth, with a sail in front that houses the usual masts and communications equipment. Immediately aft of the tower is the ballistic missile duct, which extends from the sail from the back of the ship to the stern amidships.
The tail will show a typical cruciform aircraft layout and will feature a single-shaft propeller unit.
The Type 096 follows the Type 094 speedboat in service with the modern Chinese Navy. This class is also referred to by NATO as the Tang class and carries the Chinese designation 09-VI in some sources.
Due to the novelty of this submarine, this article will be updated as information permits.
