The Type 053H3 guided missile frigate has been adopted by the modern Chinese Navy ("People's Liberation Army Naval Surface Force") since the 1990s as the successor to the earlier Type 053H2G ships (both related to the Cold War Type 053). battle frigate family). The H2G ships bring a wider range of multi-role capabilities to the Chinese Navy's surface fleet, which has only been enhanced in the subsequent H3 group. Fourteen ships of this class were built, four of which were delivered to the Pakistan Navy.
Her group includes CNS Yichang (564).
Type 053H3 ships are called "Jiangwai II" by NATO. Therefore, Type 053H2G is a "Jiangwei I-class" ship.
China Shipping Yichang was built by Guangzhou Shipyard in the 1990s and officially put into operation in December 1999. She was assigned to the Baltic Fleet and today (2018) actively participates in the ongoing operations of the Chinese fleet and is an important part of the Chinese Navy's surface warfare capabilities.
As guided missile cruisers, these ships are able to assess threats and respond from a distance. As such, their armament plans were primarily spearheaded by missile-guided weapons capable of reaching great distances with high closure rates.
Conventional weapons can be used for close range attacks or to assist in shelling coastal positions during amphibious assaults.
The CNS Yichang is designed and built to the established 053H3 frigate standard and is therefore equipped with conventional CODAD (Combined Diesel and Diesel) propulsion with 2 x 18E390VA diesel units rated at 23,600 hp and 2 x MTU diesels Group 8,715 hp. The developed power is used to drive 2 axles under the stern and propel the vessel to a range of 5,000 nautical miles at 28 knots.
This provides fuel efficiency, good speed and good range for this type of warship.
A number of advanced processing systems and sensors are on board, including the Type 360 ??series surface search radar, the Type 517H-1 long-range 2D air search radar and the Type 345/352 fire control unit. In addition, the ship is equipped with a listening system, jamming kit and radar warning receiver (RWR) to deal with incoming threats.
2 x Model 946/PL-46 15-tube rocket launchers can be used to launch decoys to further protect the ship from prying eyes (and ears).
The armament consists of eight YJ-83 surface-to-surface missile launchers divided into two 4-cell units. There is also an 8-cell unit for the HQ-7 surface-to-air missile. Conventional armament is carried by a PJ33A 100mm deck gun with two turrets on the foredeck. There are also 4 x 37mm Type 76A turrets for additional close-range anti-aircraft (AA) measures. 2 Type 3200 Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) six-barreled launchers for underwater threats, as are 2 deep-water charge racks/launchers for submarine hunting.
6 x torpedo launchers complete the armament.
Above the stern of the Yichang design is a full-service hangar and flight deck combination helipad. This serves a Harbin Z-9C Navy Medium (or similar) helicopter. The rotorcraft platform can be equipped with advanced anti-ship/anti-submarine equipment, further extending the range of this powerful warship.
The Z-9 is a licensed variant of the French-built Airbus Helicopters (Eurocopter) AS365 "Dove" medium-range, multi-role, multi-purpose helicopter.
Yichang and her sister ships had a crew of about 168. Displacement is 2,250 tons under standard load and up to 2,400 tons under full load. Dimensions include a barrel length of 367.4 feet, a beam of 40.7 feet and a draft of up to 14 feet.
The Type 053H3 ships themselves were (at least on paper) succeeded by the Type 054 battle frigate group. These are more modern alternatives to China's surface fleet, focusing more on stealth features such as plate sides and closed protrusions. They kept the missile/multi-role frigate classification, but only completed the second ship.
Since their introduction, they have been replaced by the Type 054A frigates, which now number more than 25, showing how much Chinese naval engineers have achieved in a relatively short period of time.
