History

Chile's long coastline with the Pacific Ocean requires a naval force with moderate capability and firepower for both sea and deep sea work. The Chilean Navy has approximately 25,000 personnel and more than 100 ships, including frigates, submarines and fast attack ships.

The CS Almirante Blanco Encalada (FF-15) represents a state-of-the-art frigate offering, with capabilities typical for ships of its displacement and size, and is one of eight frigates available for Navy service.

CS Almirante Blanco Encalada was born when the Chilean Navy purchased the former Dutch Navy HNLMS Abrahan van der Hulst (F832). The vessel was originally laid by Wiesingen-based builder Koninklijke Schelde Groep on February 8, 1989, and launched on September 7, 1991.

On December 15, 1993, she was officially commissioned by the Dutch Navy until her retirement in 2004. The vessel was acquired by the Chilean government, began service as CS Almirante Blando Encalada, and continued in 2015.

The CS Almirante Blanco Encalada retains its original powerplant 2 Rolls-Royce Spey 1A Series gas turbines rated at 16,700 hp and 2 Stork-Werkspoor diesel engines rated at 4,895 hp. This hybrid engine coupling allows the crew to use an engine that matches the current desired cruising speed (cruising or fast sprint) and acts as a fuel saving measure.

It can reach a total speed of 29 knots in ideal conditions and a range of 5,000 miles at 18 knots.

The ship has been approved as a frigate battleship and includes an aft flight deck for launching and recovering light to medium naval helicopters. It typically carries a Westland Lynx family of medium-sized helicopters that can be used both as a maritime supply transport and in an anti-ship warfare (ASW) role, while also providing over-the-horizon shipborne search support capabilities and tracking systems.

Ship by yourself.

Armament is a series of typical frigate-type systems that are essentially projectile and missile-oriented. Firepower comes from a 1 x 76mm/62 caliber OTO-Melara compact Mk 100 dual-purpose (DP) deck gun with a turret mounted in the forecourt forward of the bridge superstructure. The aforementioned 30mm GE Gatling gun provides close-range defense, linked to the Signal SGE-30 "Goalkeeper" digital guidance system, providing volumetric fire protection against incoming high-speed air threats such as cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles aircraft (drone). ). The ship also carries 4 x 324mm Mk 32 series torpedo tubes and Mark 46 torpedoes.

In this way, Blanco Encalada, with its diverse weapons, can deal with all types of threats - whether in the air, on the surface or underwater.

Like other ships of this type, the Almirante Blanco Encalada is equipped with an array of launch decoys and towed torpedoes for basic self-sustainment in active theaters.
