History
The four Delta II (Project 667BD Murena-M) nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines inherited the earlier Delta I class as an intermediate design. The ships are largely similar to the Delta I, but the hull has been lengthened by 52.5 feet to accommodate four additional missile tubes and increase the crew from 120 to 130. Surface displacement increased to 9,350 tons and underwater displacement to 10,500 tons.
Dimensions include a barrel length of 508.5 feet, a beam of 39.3 feet and a draft of 29.5 feet. There is a slight drop in performance compared to the Delta I boat - the surface speed remains at 12 knots, but the underwater speed is up to 24 knots (from 25 knots).
The diving depth has been increased from 390 meters to 450 meters, and the power output of the nuclear/steam engine has been increased from 52,000 hp to 55,000 hp.
The Delta II boat is equipped with 16 D-9D launch tubes for the R-29D ballistic missile family. It retained the 4 x 533 mm (21 in) forward torpedo tubes at the bow and added two 400 mm torpedo tubes.
In addition to the obvious physical changes to the series, the Delta II submarines have also introduced some noise reduction features to improve the acoustic levels presented - primarily shock struts on the steam turbines and hydroacoustic coatings on the hull.
The Delta II ships were built in Severodvinsk from 1972 to 1975, and over time they were themselves replaced by newer Delta III classes. The decommissioning of Delta II-class ships began in 1996.
