Dmitry Rogachev (375) / (Project 22160)

History

Dmitry (also Dmitriy) Rogachev (375) is the second of six program entries for the 22160-class large patrol fleet in service with the modern Russian Navy. Rogachev was in service (December 2018), succeeding the main ship Vasily Bykov (368).

Both ships are currently assigned to the Black Sea Fleet and active (2019). Four more ships are planned for the series, with Pavel Derzhavin currently (2019) under construction, followed by Sergey Kotov (2020), Viktor Velikiy (2021) and Nikolay Sipyagin (2022).

Rogachev was built by the builders of the Zelenodolsk shipyard, laid on July 25, 2014. She launched in late 2017 and went live in 2019.

As a patrol vessel, the class is required to intercept potential threats at high speed and over range close to shore. The hull has a draft of just 11 feet and is complemented by a barrel length of 308 feet and a beam of 46 feet. This gives the ship a certain "compactness" when operating in a confined environment such as a "closed" sea area. The propulsion scheme is a fuel-oriented combined diesel and natural gas unit (CODAG), where two marine diesel engines are paired with gas turbines, the former providing 6,000 hp for cruising and the latter for faster "fast" speeds reaching over distance.

4 diesel generators are also installed.

This allowed the Rogachev to reach speeds of up to 30 knots and range of up to 6,000 miles under ideal conditions, giving warships good "legs". The ship's shop allows her to stay at sea for up to 60 days. Her crew consisted of eighty men, who could carry another sixty if necessary.

Armament consists of a 76.2mm AK-176MA main gun with a dual-purpose turret (DP) mounted above the forecastle. In addition, the ship is equipped with automatic grenade launchers (AGLs), heavy machine guns (HMGs) and personal weapons for all crew members.

The ship also supports the installation of a Vertical Launch System (VLS), serving various surface-to-air/surface-to-surface missile types, and can also be fitted with 324mm torpedo tubes to counter surface and underwater threats. An export version supporting the 3M-47 "Gibka" naval air defense system was also proposed.

The overall look of the boat is very modern, using board edges to minimise its character - this creates a relatively smooth surface and elegant lines from bow to stern. The deck guns and turrets are located above the forecastle as usual, providing an excellent angle of attack for the front and front of the ship. The hull superstructure has an acutely angled surface, and its bridge area features a set of clean rectangular windows. A flat, mostly enclosed main mast is located on the bridge section and contains various communication, sensor and radar ports.

The superstructure then descends rapidly, ending with the rear hangar and helipad combination, which can accommodate a Kamov Ka-27 or Ka-226 naval helicopter. The helicopter has added over-the-horizon (OtH) capability for anti-ship/submarine combat operations, as well as maritime resupply and search and rescue operations.

The entire class should be ready and operational by the mid-2020s, giving the Black Sea Fleet considerable capabilities in the region - especially against neighboring Ukraine. Russian forces captured Sevastopol from the Ukrainians in 2014, and an ongoing war has led to a lot of bloodshed and instability in the region - especially with the presence of the Russian navy.
