History

For the modern Islamic Republic of Iran (IRAN) Navy, the Fatah-class (Conqueror-class) submarine fleet consists of only two ships. The leader ship Fatah, built by the Ocean Industry Organization, represents a step toward independence from sanctions-hit, oil-rich Gulf state Iran, towards local submarine production and military weapons.

Its design is believed to be heavily influenced by the types of Chinese and North Korean submarines operated by the Gulf states, and is specifically designed for shallow water/coastal operations.

The name "Fateh" means "conqueror" in Persian.

The layout of the boat is mostly traditional and traditional: the sails (or "fins") are set near the midship, the bow is blunt and fitted with sonar seats. The sail is said to contain a "lock" chamber for special forces agents ("frogmen") on covert/sabotage missions. The tail is based on a cruciform aircraft pattern, with a single axis extending rearward. The dive plane is located upstream of the fuselage (as opposed to the sail). With a surface displacement of 530 tons and a submerged displacement of 600 tons, while the dimensions include a barrel length of 157 feet, the compact size of the submarine allows efficient operation near shore.

The hull has been tested to a depth of 200 meters (655 feet).

Inside, a conventional diesel power plant is in play, giving the vessel a surface speed of 11 knots and a submerged speed of 14 knots. According to local media, the vessel has a range of up to 3,600 nautical miles for coastal patrol and deterrence operations, and can stay underwater for up to 35 days. Armament includes 4 x 533, (21") torpedo tubes, all in the bow, which may also support missile launches and mine laying.

The submarine's crew is unknown - although there may be at least 20 crew members based on comparable modern designs.[ /p]

The first ship in this class was announced in October 2011, reportedly received by the Navy sometime in 2013, and sea trials began immediately thereafter. It was first observed and officially launched around November 2014.

The status of the second ship is unknown - it was photographed during construction at Bandar Anzali Naval Base (Caspian Sea) and is believed to have been in service with IRIN since 2015.
