History
The end of the Cold War (1947-1991) marked the end of accepted naval doctrine, which in turn developed design and construction practice. The vaunted Soviet submarine threat is over, and the world looks forward to lasting peace.
Therefore, the French Navy focused on protecting its economic zone and invested in the development and construction of a new "surveillance frigate" - the Florea class.
The goals of these new ships are full helicopter support, "blue water" capability (inherently good seaworthiness and operational range), and modest weapons support against most threats at sea (except the main battle fleet)...so A total of eight ships were built in the Floreal class, six of which went to the French Navy (Floral, Prairial, Nivose, Ventose, Vendemiaire, Germinal) and two were sold to the Moroccan government (Mohammed V, Hassan II). To control costs and speed up construction, the vessels are built using standard commercial shipping construction practices and methods.
FS Floreal ordered in 1989 and laid on 2 April 1990. She was launched on October 6, 1990, commissioned on May 27, 1992, and remains active in the French Navy??. The ship was built by Chantiers de l'Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire, France.
These frigates perform a variety of roles for the French Navy, including surveillance, deterrence, protection, intervention and humanitarian missions. Floreal's main mission is the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) serving French interests abroad.
The built warship had a displacement of 2,950 tons, a length of 307 feet, a width of 46 feet, and a draft of 14 feet. The drive is provided by 4 x SEMT Pielstick 6PA6 L280 marine diesel engines producing 8,800 hp. There are also 3 Baudouin 12P15 2SR diesel generators and 3 Alsthom AA 49L9 generators in use.
Ulstein drives provide fine-tuned mobility. Under ideal conditions, it can reach a top speed of 20 knots and a range of up to 10,000 nautical miles.
There were approximately 90 crew members on board, including officers, non-commissioned officers and 42 men. Air Arm has a team of 11 people. The DRBV-21C (Mars) was used as an air search radar, while the Racal Decca RM1290 fulfilled the navigation needs.
ARBG-1A "Saigon" is an electronic warfare (EW) unit. Carry 2 Dagaie Deception Systems.
This warship demonstrates standard exterior design practices of the late Cold War. The forecastle is stepped and houses deck guns with turrets. Behind it is a bridge section with an integrated foremast. A central and uninterrupted midship of the hull structure.
The chimneys have a flat design and are placed side by side. The stern of the warship has a helipad that can support a medium helicopter. A full-service hangar is also available, and the typical rotorcraft is the Airbus Helicopters (Eurocopter) Panther Navy Helicopter.
The aircraft is also equipped with an anti-submarine warfare (ASW) role.
Arming is spearheaded by a 100mm CADAM deck gun, with the turret located on the forecastle. 2 x MM.38 Exocet Anti-Ship Missile (ASM) launchers are installed, with close support provided by 2 x 20mm automatic cannons.
For extreme close range defense, the ship is equipped with crew-operated 4 x 12.7mm Heavy Machine Guns (HMG).
Since commissioning, FS Floreal has participated in the United Nations (UN) effort in Somalia II (1933) and recaptured the yacht Tanit in 2009.
FS Floreal is located in Port des Galets, Reunion Island, near Madagascar. All ports except the overseas home port of a class.
