HMS Agincourt (1865) History

HMS Agincourt was an armoured ship of the Royal Navy, in service from 1865 to 1909. The vessel is a sail/steam hybrid design with five sails on the mast, but the main propulsion is a Mozley twin-cylinder steam engine. The type is characterized by its armored iron casing, rigging and double hoppers.

Agincourt is from three ships of the Minotaur class, which also includes HMS Minotaur and HMS Northumberland.

The armament of the 1868 HMS Agincourt consisted of a 4 x 9" main gun and an additional 24 x 7" main gun, both of the rifled muzzle-loading type. In 1875, she was re-armed with a 17 x 9 inch main gun (still front mounted) and a 2 x 20 pound smoothbore gun.

Her supplement, which remained the same throughout her career, consisted of 800 men, although around 700 could be deployed in emergency situations. Her armor is 5 inches thick at the girdle, with a teak backing up to 10 inches.

The HMS Agincourt was commissioned in 1865 and officially opened a few years later. Her type was revered for her sheer firepower and armor protection and found its way into the fleet.

The ship ran aground in 1871 and suffered some damage, but was repaired in time to remain in service as a deterrent to war rather than a true warship. Her active career ended in rather disgraceful fashion at the end of the 19th century, for which the ship was used as a floating trainer.

Her last voyage took her to Sheerness, where she was stripped of military value and converted into a coal ship.

Agincourt used many official names throughout his life. These include Captain HMS (actually her name as she lay down), Agincourt (after launching), Boscawen III, Ganges II and, finally, simply - C. 109. Like most other ships of her era, she fell to the side of the road, with few efforts to protect them.

After serving her country for decades, she was thrown into the waste paper in 1960. The 1865 HMS Agincourt was first laid in October 1861, launched in 1865 and completed in June 1867.
