History of HMS Montrose (F236)
From 1985 to 1999, British shipbuilding companies built 16 Type 23 warships for the Royal Navy and the Chilean Navy. Three were taken over by the latter, while a total of sixteen were commissioned by the former.
Among them were HMS Montrose (F236), which was laid by Marconi Marines on November 1, 1989, launched on July 31, 1992, and officially commissioned by the Royal Navy fleet on June 2, 1994.
Frigates are classified as anti-submarine warfare (ASW) ships, but are apparently capable of performing other defined roles, including airspace denial, blue water patrol, and escort. It has a displacement of 5,000 tons, a length of 436.3 feet, a beam of 52.9 feet, and a draft of up to 23.10 feet.
The propulsion scheme is a combined diesel-electric and gas (CODLAG) propulsion that utilizes the best characteristics of generator, diesel and gas-centric systems to improve fuel efficiency. 4 x Paxman Valenta 12CM Diesel Generators fitted with 2 x GEC 4,000hp Electric Motors and 2 x Rolls-Royce "Spey" SM1C 31,100hp Turbines.
Under ideal conditions, a top speed of over 28 knots can be achieved, with a range of 7,500 nautical miles.
There are 185 crew members on board, but a maximum of 205 people can be accommodated on board.
Its form factor uses proven construction methods, including a single deck gun with a turret located above the fore, a 32-cell rocket unit in the stern and forward of the bridge superstructure, a low-profile full Closed smoke funnels are located near the midship, as well as the superstructure section of the aft fuselage, leading to a full-service helipad. The warship can support one or two medium lift rotorcraft through its combined landing site/hangar facility, which are traditionally equipped for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) or anti-ship roles, but can undertake search and rescue (SAR) missions -the-Horizon (OtH) Patrol and transport missions as needed.
The supported helicopter is usually the Westland "Lynx" HMA. 8 or Westland "Merlin" HM. 2 kinds.
The armament of the Type 23 ships consists of a 1 x 4.5 inch BAe Systems Mk. 8 series gun with turrets "Sea Wolf" or "Sea Sensor" surface-to-air missile (SAM) series. In addition, the ship is equipped with 2 x 30mm Mk. 2 series guns, 2 quadruple Harpoon anti-ship missile launchers and 4 x 7.62mm General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMG) for close range defense. Also supports a pair of 7.62mm miniguns for ferocious close-range defense.
2 x 324mm "Sting Ray" twin torpedo launchers are also installed.
HMS Montrose has been active in theatres in the South Atlantic and the Middle East since 1994. She carries six battle medals from her earlier incarnation, HMS Montrose (D01), a World War II veteran (1939-1945) who saw action in the Atlantic, Dunkirk, Arctic, North Sea, English Channel and Normandy.
