INS Delhi (D61) History

INS Delhi (D61) is the lead ship of the Delhi-class guided missile destroyer currently in service with the Indian Navy. There are three stages in total, all built at the Mazagon Dock Limited shipyard.

This group was used to succeed the Rajput class, but was later replaced (on paper at least) by the newer Calcutta class (described in detail elsewhere on this site). Nonetheless, three Delhi-class ships, including INS Delhi, are still in service at the time of writing (December 2017).

INS Derry was laid on December 12, 1992, launched on March 20, 1995, and officially commissioned on November 15, 1997. The ship's home port is in Mumbai.

There were up to 350 officers and men on board. Various systems were installed for different missions, including Bharat RAWL surface search radar, three MR-212/201 Vaygach-U ("Palm Frond") navigation radars, Bharat APSOH/HUMSA hull mounted sonar and "Garden Reach" . " Model 15-750 Variable Depth Sonar.

Armament includes 1 x 100mm AK-100 deck gun and turret, supported by 2 x 30mm AK-630 Close-In Weapon Systems (CIWSs). However, the heart of the kit is 4 x KT-184 quadruple rocket launchers for the Kh-35 "Switchblade" missile family (NATO: SS-N-25). There are also 2 "Shtil" surface-to-air missile (SAM) launchers.

In addition, the ship carries 2 RBU-6000 anti-submarine rocket (ASROC) launchers and 1 quintuple torpedo launcher.

The outline of the warship sees a raised bow with a solid line from bow to stern. Deck guns with turrets were placed as usual on the forecastle, and various missile mounts were installed in front of the bridge superstructure. The main maid is integrated into the superstructure of the bridge, with the first low flue leading to the secondary mast.

Aft of the auxiliary mast is another low-profile smoke funnel. The hangar and helipad complete the look of the warship. The helipad is located above the rear and can serve a pair of medium helicopters (usually the Westland Sea King).

Since its commissioning, INS Delhi has been actively participating in exercises involving the European allies of the United Kingdom and France.
