In December 2017, INS Kalvari (S50) became the latest addition to the Indian Navys submarine fleet. Its design is based on the French Scorpene class (supplied by French DCNS), which also forms the new vessel added to the inventory in Brazil, Chile and Malaysia. INS Kalvari is the first of six Kalvari-class ships planned to serve the Indian Navy. She was laid by Mumbai shipyard Mazagon Dock Limited on April 1, 2009 and launched on April 6, 2015.
Her hull was completed on October 30, 2015, and the vessel was delivered to the Indian Navy in September 2016.
Her official commissioning took place on December 14, 2017, almost ten years after she laid the keel. The name "Kalvari" means "Tiger Shark" and it is the INS Kalvari following the commissioning (since decommissioning) of the first Indian submarine on 8 December 1967.
The new ship is part of the "Project 75" plan to bring more indigenous military construction to India.
INS Kalvari (S23) 1,725 ??t displacement, 202 ft length, 20 ft beam and 19 ft true draft. Her power comes from a conventional diesel-electric unit, which requires her to surface to recharge the battery. The surface speed can reach 12 knots, and the underwater speed can reach up to 20 knots. With a range of up to 7,500 miles, the ship can remain at sea with an average crew of 31 to 50 days. The heavy hull has been tested to a depth of 350 meters.
Like other modern submarine types, the Kalvari places great emphasis on being a quiet underwater vessel, so her acoustic signature is reported to be low (making her very useful in an intelligence gathering role).
On board is typical armament, consisting of 6 x 533 mm (21") torpedo tubes and 18 torpedo reloads. These torpedoes fire the "Black Shark" or "Varunastra" series of torpedoes, but Also capable of firing in Launch French - made SM.39 "Flying Fish" anti-ship missiles. If equipped with 30 mines (instead of torpedoes) for such missions, the ship can be used as a sea space denial as a minelayer.
Torpedo tubes Both are installed on the bow/forward.
Externally, the boat has a traditional design with a rounded bow, tapered stern and center sail. The drive planes are on the sails, and the fins are arranged in a cross.
INS Kalvari is the first French Scorpene-class submarine to be delivered to the Indian Navy, representing an increase in the country's underwater power - although the country still lags behind regional rival China.
