History

The Maya-class destroyer group serving the modern Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) is being built by specialists from the Japan Maritime Union and will be used to succeed the Atago-class ships, the self-improving Kongo class of Atago-class ships. Like the Atago class, the Maya class consists of just two ships, but represents the latest in naval sensor processing and long-range firepower. Their capabilities allow them to operate independently or as part of a main battle fleet. The lead ship JS Maya (DDG-179) was laid on 17 April 2017.

She was launched for testing on July 30, 2018, and officially entered service with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force on March 19, 2020.

JS Maya is a subclass of the former Atago class, also known as the "27DDG destroyer". The main component of the Maya class is the integration of the powerful maritime "Aegis" combat system. Another difference is that it relies on a COGLAG (Combined Gas Electric and Gas) propulsion scheme.

The JS Maya, named after Mount Maya, displaces 8,332 tons under standard load and 10,414 tons under full load. Dimensions include a barrel length of 557.4 feet, a beam of 72.9 feet and a draft of up to 21 feet. Power comes from an IHI (General Electric) unit consisting of 4 LM2500-30 series gas turbines driving a 2 x 5 blade propeller shaft.

Total output hits 68,010 horsepower, making it suitable for quick action or driving. The ship is moving at about 30 knots.

With a crew of 300 on board, sensors and processing systems include the AN/SPY-1D(V) passive electronically scanned array (PESA) radar suite and the AN/APQ-9 surface search radar system. AN/SQQ-89 is an installed Underwater Combat System (UWCS) for anti-submarine warfare. 3xMk.

Includes 99 Mod 8 Fire Control Systems (FCS), as well as Mk 116 and Mk 160 FCS units.

Armament includes 1 x 5" (127 mm) /L62 Mk 45 Mod 4 gun with turret in the forward compartment, supported by 2 x 20 mm Phalanx Close-In Weapon System (CIWS). The ship is its missile base, Led by a 64-unit Vertical Launch System (VLS) at the front and a 32-unit VLS at the rear, it has the capability to launch SM-2MR standard missiles, SM-3 anti-ballistic missiles, SM-6 standard missiles and the Type 07 VL-ASROC ( Vertically launched anti-submarine missile) 2 missile launchers support up to 8 Type 17 missiles and 2 Type 68 triple torpedo tubes, supporting Mk 46 or Type 73 torpedo series.

Additional support for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) operations comes from the Sikorsky SH-60K naval helicopter, which can be launched or picked up from the rear helipad. There is also a full-service hangar on board that accommodates a second helicopter system.

Maya's structure uses all known and proven features of reduced signatures, including plate sides and closed masts/smoke funnels. The understated design also helps keep the Maya a small target on the horizon.

Combining these qualities with its onboard systems, the ship has many of the survivability required of modern warship types.
