History of Kyiv (item 1143 Krechyet)
The Kyiv class is a larger version of the Moscow class, and their design is a bold step toward becoming a full-deck aircraft carrier. Without a catapult and landing gear, she can only operate V/STOL fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters. In the Soviet Navy, Kyiv-class ships were specifically called heavy aviation cruisers. The layout of the ship reflects the Moscow class, with the bow or front part dedicated to heavy missile weapons and the stern or stern part for aviation. Unlike normal practice, the V/STOL fighter needs a rolling deck for takeoff, and has a sloping flight deck on the port side, 2/3 in length and a moderate angle of 4.5 degrees.
This significant flight deck overhang created a weight imbalance problem. To balance the flight deck, a huge island (by carrier standards) was built on the starboard side of the ship.
The Kyiv class is intended to support strategic missile submarines, and she is also capable of participating in air defense, anti-submarine and surface warfare.
The Kyiv class, also known as Krechyet, corresponds to a new class system introduced by the Soviet Navy. The assortment features a 14,700-square-foot flight deck, safety ropes, and bow ramp. Carrier wings include 14 x Yakovlev Yak-41M "Freestyle" vertical launch interceptors, 8 x Yakovlev Yak 38 "Forger" attack aircraft, 10 x Kamov Ka-27 PLO "Helix", 2 x Kamov Ka-27 PS "Helix" "". "Search and Rescue (SAR) helicopters and 4 x Kamov Ka-27 RLD "Helix" helicopters. Two lifts on the starboard side transport the aircraft from the hangar deck to the flight deck.
The ship's defense is provided by "Bazalt" anti-ship missile systems in conjunction with 8 surface-to-surface missile launchers. The Krechyet-class air defense system uses Klinok vertical missile launchers and anti-aircraft missiles.
The Type 1143 ship was designed by the Nevskoye Planning and Design Bureau and built at the Nikolaev South Plant (formerly Chernomorsky 444 Shipyard). Each ship in the class has some different design cues. Starting in Minsk, aircraft capacity has been increased by more than 50% by changing the hangar deck area and aircraft parking area. During the overhaul, the leading edge of the flight deck was rounded and a wind deflector was added.
The Kyiv sisters were designed to carry new-generation aircraft, such as the Yakovlev Yak-36P (Yak-141) supersonic VTOL aircraft, although these were later cancelled. The Wehrmacht uses a mixture of Kamov Ka-27 and Kamov Ka-25 series helicopters. The last aircraft carrier to be built was the Baku, and despite all the improving modifications, some consider her a class of her own. Enhancements to the unit include a phased array radar, extensive electronic warfare facilities, and an expanded command and control suite.
The flight deck extends 5 meters forward, 15 feet more than in Kyiv. Other modifications include the addition of four additional SS-N-12 SLCM transmitters, for a total of 12. The ship is armed with 60 anti-submarine missiles and an integrated Udav-1 anti-submarine system.
Kyiv was decommissioned in 1994 and used in parts of Admiral Gorshkov. In August 2000, it was reported that a Chinese shipyard had purchased the decommissioned aircraft carrier from Russia. Her sister ship, the Minsk, was sold to China as a floating leisure casino. Russia has sold the Admiral Gorshkov, retired since 1991, to the Indian Navy. According to reports, the Gorshkov is undergoing major modifications at a cost of $500 to $650 million, and according to assurances from the Russian government, she will be ready to serve in the Indian Navy in 2009.
While serving in India, she changed her name to INS Vikramaditya.
Update:
The Kyiv Hotel, now owned by China, is scheduled to open sometime in 2012 with its new look - this ex-Navy luxury hotel - all part of a military theme park east of Tianjin, catering to a slightly smaller number of tourists Above a standard environment.
