History

The Kilo-class submarine was designed by the Central Ocean Engineering Design Bureau and officially commissioned in April 1982. At the time of writing (September 2013), a total of 57 ships of this class have been finalized, of which 47 are still in service. Two ships were officially decommissioned, while one was lost.

The Kilo class replaces the outgoing Tango class ships, and the Kilo class itself is succeeded by the Lasa class series. The ships were exported outside Soviet/Russian territory and served in Algeria, China, India, Iran, Poland, Romania and Vietnam.

This class is primarily designed for anti-ship/anti-submarine missions.

In terms of design, the Kilo class displaces 2,300 tons when surfaced and close to 4,000 tons underwater. It has a barrel length of up to 74 meters, a width of 9.9 meters and a draft of 6.5 meters. The vessel has been tested at a depth of 300 meters, while operational use is typically around 240 meters. The Kilo-class has a conventional powerplant arranged in a diesel-electric configuration. These include 2 diesel generators rated at 1,000 kW and 1 engine delivering up to 6,800 SHP to a single, multi-blade, fixed-pitch propeller fixed along the stern shaft.

This arrangement gives the boat a surface speed of 12 knots and a submerged speed of almost 25 knots. The range is about 7,500 miles when cruising along the water at 7 knots. Range is reduced to 400 miles when submerged at 3 knots. The Kilo class carries enough supplies to sustain the crew at sea for up to 45 days before needing resupply.

Her crew consisted of 52 officers, consisting of officers and seamen.

As an attack submarine, the vehicle is equipped with 6 x 533mm torpedo tubes and 18 x torpedo reloads. Some versions are also equipped with the Club S anti-ship missile system. The vehicle can also disperse up to 24 mines (instead of torpedo charges) if necessary.

The Russian variant is defended on the ground by 8 x SA-N-8 "Gremlin" or 8 x SA-N-10 "Gimlet" surface-to-air missile systems.

It is believed that the modern Russian Navy today (2013) operates submarines of approximately 17 km. China, India and Vietnam are the next largest operators with 12, 10 and 6 vessels respectively.

In Russian naval nomenclature, the Kilo class is considered "Project 877 Partus", where "Partus" means "halibut".
