KMS Bismarck History
The KMS Bismarck is undoubtedly one of the most famous ocean-going ships of the 20th century. The German super battleship single-handedly pinned down a significant portion of the British Royal Navy, which devoted itself and its available resources to hunting down and sinking Hitler's most powerful symbol of hegemony. Equipped with an amazing array of guns and core armor, the Bismarck stood a lot before suffering damage in 1941.
The design is in some ways a throwback to World War I designs, and draws heavily on "pocket battleship" design lessons learned from that conflict.
The KMS Bismarck - a product of Blohm & Voss in Hamburg, Germany - imposed severe restrictions on military build-up after the First World War (of which Germany was a part). be a loser). Following Adolf Hitler's tampering with the Treaty of Versailles, the KMS Bismarck (along with her sister ship Tirpitz) gave birth to a 50,000-ton monster - far beyond the limits of the treaty.
While oddly consistent with the construction methods of previous wars, we have left no stone unturned in making this class a truly formidable force on the high seas.
Of particular note are her large 15" artillery turrets, eight of which are housed in four heavily armored turrets - two guns each. Two turrets are located in the front, and the remaining two are located in the rear.
They provided a set of 12 x 5.9 inch guns for the main guns, which were located around the midship superstructure, with three turrets on each side, two turrets each. The guns are aptly named Anton, Bruno, Caesar and Dora from front to back.
105mm and 37mm guns complemented the main guns, and anti-aircraft defenses were reinforced by an abundance of quadruple and single 20mm cannons. The midship section includes a wide berthing area including superstructures, masts, communications equipment, lifeboats and two-way catapults.
Bismarck also carried up to four Ar 196 Arado seaplanes for reconnaissance and patrol duties, but could be fully loaded with six aircraft if required.
Armor was the key to Bismarck's survival. This attention was paid to the component, which accounted for almost half of the total weight of the ship, and was used to protect critical areas from shelling, bombardment and torpedo hits.
Plenty of armor is used for conveyor belts and decks along with the hull and turret components mentioned above. This armor was a step behind its contemporaries in service with the US and British navies, but it was impressively thick.
Power for this large vessel comes from a Blohm & Voss 3 shaft geared steam turbine producing an impressive 138,000 to 150,000 shaft horsepower. The Bismarck turned her three-bladed propellers from her three massive shafts at a top speed of 31 knots.
The turbines are powered by no less than 12 high pressure Wagner brand steam heating boilers, which are located amidships for maximum protection and as an additional measure are installed in six watertight compartments.
After eight months of training in the Baltic, the Bismarck was released into the Atlantic. British ships attempt to intercept the mighty Bismarck and heavy cruiser KMS Prinz Eugen on their way to Bergen on 23 May 1941. Two Royal Navy ships, HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Hood, responded quickly, although German artillery was shut down faster. As a result, the Hood suffered a catastrophic fire, which exploded as a shell from Prinz Eugen fell on her. The Prince of Wales was hit directly by the Bismarck's artillery on her bridge.
Germany has a good chance that British ships are recalled.
The Bismarck saw very little en route and continued into the Atlantic playground until it was noticed that her substructure had been struck and the system was losing fuel. To fix things before the loss got out of hand, the Bismarck's captain changed course to Brest, and the Bismarck's fate was sealed.
Although she avoided contact with the British Army, when she was discovered, she launched several attacks on the Bismarck, although these attacks did little damage and allowed the Bismarck to live another day. Day after day, the Bismarck swam through the waters to safety until her signal was intercepted by the British, allowing the enemy to surround her position.
On the night of May 26, Fairey Swordfish torpedo planes struck the mighty ship again, destroying her control with two direct hits.
The crippled ship continued to travel despite its severely limited speed and complete inability to turn. At dawn the next day, HMS Rodney and HMS King George V surfaced and opened fire on the wrecked vessel, and for only 30 minutes, KMS Bismarck did not return fire. Until now, the Bismarck was just her hull as she left port, only successfully hitting the Rodney. The last torpedo from HSM Dorset eventually sank the largest battleship in the European theater of operations in 1040 (no doubt thanks to the efforts of the Germans to sink themselves instead of being captured).
Hitler's pride in the ocean finally took their place.
Different accounts of the report have surfaced, leading most to believe that the sinking is more likely to be attributed to Germany's attempt to sink its own ship. Research supports this theory because torpedo damage occurs very rarely below the ship's waterline, although severe damage to the superstructure is evident.
These results suggest that the Bismarck was actually sunk by her owners, rather than direct action by the Royal Navy - although one can imagine the ferocity of the fire. In any case, one can assume that the torpedo sinking of the largest German battleship is still a romantic scene rather than giving the Germans the last laugh.
The KMS Bismarck consisted of nearly 2,200 personnel, staffed by more than 100 officers. The ship was ordered in 1935, laid in 1936, launched in 1939, and officially commissioned in 1940. Today, the Bismarck sits about 15,700 feet below sea level off the coast of Brest, France. The wreck was discovered in 1989 by Dr.
Robert Ballard found on the Titanic. The battleship is the focus of the Hollywood movie Sinking Bismarck! 1960.
