PNS Hashmat (S135) History

Two Agosta-class diesel-electric ocean-going attack submarines originally built in France for export to South Africa (operating as "Astrant" and "Adventurous"). However, the UN embargo on the African country means the two ships can no longer be sold and delivered to interested parties. In 1977, the two models were sold to the Pakistan Navy under the name Agosta 70 class and were taken over in 1979.

They are PNS Hashmat (S135) and PNS Hurmat (S136).

The arrival of three ships based on the improved design of the Agosta 90B class, finally strengthening the Agosta 70 fleet.

PNS Hashmat (S135) is the lead ship of two powerful Agosta 70 boats received from the Pakistan Navy. Her older sister is PNS Hurmat (S136) in service.

Today, both active ships are in service, operating alongside three Agosta-90B class ships under the command of PNS Khalid (described in detail elsewhere on this website).

Agosta 70 class ships in the 1940 ton displacement range with conventional propulsion systems and conventional submarine design arrangements. The crew size is around 45 people, which is a lot due to the relatively compact size of this class. The sails are set amidships forward, and a cross-shaped aircraft arrangement can be seen at the stern.

Dive planes are installed along the bow. Inside, the usual sonar, radar and electronic warfare are present. Armament includes 4 x 533mm torpedo tubes facing the bow to support the launch of US-made Harpoon anti-ship missiles. There are also marine donor qualities built into the boat.
