History

A long coastline, a growing regional arms race, and an unstable maritime claim to its neighbors force South Korea to maintain a modern and active naval force. It followed the example of the world in deploying fleets of missile platforms such as the guided-missile destroyer ROKS Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin (DDH-975) launched on 22 May 2002 and officially commissioned on 2 December 2003 at the time of writing (2014 ), she remained active in the South Korean Navy??, built by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering.

DDH-975 is the main ship of Chungmu Gongyi Sonshin-class battle destroyer. She displaces 4,800 tons under standard load and nearly 5,000 tons under full load. Dimensions include a barrel length of 492.1 feet, a beam of 55.8 feet and a draft of 31.1 feet.

Their propulsion system is conventional and consists of a CODOG arrangement ("combined diesel or gas"). The CODOG features diesel engines and geared gas turbines attached to each propeller shaft for high-speed racing, although only one engine is involved at a time on the shaft (unlike the more complex CODAG arrangements found in other battleships).

Under ideal conditions, their machines can achieve speeds of nearly 30 knots and a range of up to 5,500 nautical miles.

Externally, Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin adopts modern shipbuilding design practices, including the front part of the board side and the stern superstructure. Her main mast is closed and her chimney fits nicely into her profile. In front was a single-deck gun with unobstructed views over the bow and sides of the forward hull.

Behind the gun is a Lockheed Mk 41 series VLS (Vertical Launch System) turret containing most of its missile weapons. The bridge is just behind these cells, clearly identifiable by a row of large windows. The rocket launcher is located on a bridge superstructure that traverses the bracket, behind which is the main mast, which contains the sensors, communications and processing systems.

The included smoke funnel is located amidships with a pair of anti-ship quadruple rocket launchers. At the rear is a second superstructure that includes air search and fire control systems along its roof, as well as additional defensive weapons. The stern features a helideck for the launch and recovery of medium-sized offshore helicopter systems with full hangar services.

The typical crew size for the vessel is 200 employees.

Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin's armament starts with a 5-inch Mk 45/54 naval deck gun in the front. The ship also carries a 32-cell VLS with SM-2 Block IIIA (RIM-66 standard) missiles Range surface-to-air missiles for air defense There is also an optional 32-cell library for use at full war load Launch Missiles - Launch torpedoes or cruise missiles at sea or land-based targets. 116 Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) launchers provide melee defense against incoming air threats.

Its trainable mount allows for flexible attack angles. Midship is a pair of AGM-84 Harpoon quad missile launchers for anti-ship use. Extreme close-range defense is handled by a seven-barreled Gatling 30mm "Goalkeeper" cannon system - comparable to the American 20mm Phalanx setup.

Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin's airborne systems include the Raytheon AN/SPS-49(V)5 2D air search radar. Thales (Signalaal) MW08 3D G-band PESA (Passive Electronically Scanned Array) fire control target designation radar has also been installed. The DSQS-23 series hull-mounted active search/attack sonar system can track/attack enemy submarines. Daewoo Telecom also has a towed sonar array.

Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin is equipped with four Sprue radar countermeasure launchers to stop tracking threats to ships.
