History
The Republic of Korea (ROK) Navy is forced to deploy large numbers of troops on the ground, air and sea due to its vast coastline and potential proximity threats to North Korea and China. Its navy has state-of-the-art solutions, servicing submarines, mine warships, destroyers, frigates and frigates. As one of several surface combatants available to the service, the Daegu-class embodies the guided-missile frigate concept. ROKS Daegu (FFG-818) is a battleship of a class said to have a total of 8 players.
Daegu is the only active ship in the series, with sister ships FFG-819 and FFG-821 launched, and FFG-822 launched.
FFG-823, FFG-825, FFG-826 and FFG-827 are not implemented yet.
The construction of these warships is shared between Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) and Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) shipyards. ROKS Daegu (FFG-818) was built by DSME and launched on June 2, 2016.
She officially entered service on March 6, 2018 and continues to be active in the Korean fleet.
The modern combat frigate is one of the more compact surface combatants deployed by any naval force. These ships are well-equipped, fast in the water, and fully capable of operating independently or as part of a main force. As a result, they have a wide range of armored solutions, as well as state-of-the-art sensors and processing systems.
For South Korea, the Daegu-class frigates on paper replace the Incheon-class fleetthe coastal defense-focused fleet that has been deployed since 2013but is closely related to the earlier fleet, sometimes referred to as "Incheon-" Class "Class" means Lot II".
As expected, ROKS Daegu is a state-of-the-art service solution including fuel efficiency measures, stealth qualities and a wide range of installed weapons. Displacement reaches 3,600 tons when fully loaded, and dimensions include a barrel length of 400 feet, a beam of 46 feet, and a draft of 13 feet.
The shallow draft enables the ship to operate near shore (CtS) to support inland forces or amphibious assault.
The vessel's propulsion scheme is a combined diesel-electric or gas (CODLOG) configuration, designed to maximize fuel economy while providing better performance. The unit includes 1 Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbine, 4 MTU 12V4000 M53B marine diesel engines and 2 Leonardo DRS electric motors.
In general, the entire propulsion system is of British-German-Italian origin.
This arrangement gives the vessel a maximum sea speed of 30 knots and a range of up to 4,500 nautical miles - giving the warship good "legs" under ideal conditions and ample space for patrolling the vast South Korean coast voyage.
140 onboard. Systems include the SPS-550K Air Search 3D Radar, SPG-540K Fire Control System (FCS) Radar and Hanwha SAQ-600K Naval Shield Integrated Battle Management System (NSICMS). SQS-240K hull mounted and SQR-250K towed sonar arrays aid in submarine hunting.
Electronic warfare (EW) is handled by the LIG Nex 1 SLQ-200(V)K "Sonata" kit. The SLQ-261K installed is a torpedo countermeasure (CM) system.
Following Western design methods, the ship's armament is a complementary combination of projectile and missile-based solutions, with a 5" (127 mm) Mk 45 Mod 4/L62 turret deck gun mounted above the forecastle. Defense is via two 20mm Phalanx Close-In Weapon Systems (CIWS) with a 16-unit Vertical Launch System (VLS) supporting Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAM), Anti-Ship Missiles and Land In addition, there are two torpedo triple tubes Launcher (supports "Blue Shark" torpedo series) and two 4-unit SSM-700K "Haicheng" anti-ship missile launchers.
All in all, this warship has enough firepower to deal with most naval threats, whether from the air, sea or below. This allows the ship to be called upon to perform many missions, including air defense, deterrence and direct attack.
An extension of the warship is its single helicopter, supported by a rear helipad equipped with a full-service hangar facility. Supported types include Westland "Super Lynx" or AW159 utility types, typically equipped for submarine or ship hunter roles.
In addition, these helicopters can assist in maritime resupply, search and rescue (SAR) operations, and over-the-horizon (OtH) reconnaissance operations.
