History of the Severodvinsk / Yasen class (Project 885/885M)
The Yasen-class nuclear-powered attack submarines of the modern Russian Navy are one of the most powerful submarine fleets in the world today (NATO codes Severodvinsk as Severodvinsk). 10 ships of this class are planned, of which 5 are under construction and 1 is completed (as of 2018).
The group is well respected by Western commanders, who see it as a major and growing underwater threat due to its increased capabilities and firepower. Construction of the submarines began in 1993 and they entered service in 2013.
Development
The ships were planned as early as the late 1970s at the end of the Cold War (1947-1991), but problems abounded (including the collapse of the Soviet Union and later the Soviet-Russian Navy). ) pushes its real release date to the 2010s. Funding for the series finally arrived in 2003, prompting a restart of the program and a decision to use the class with an equally new nuclear type - the Dolgorukiy class (detailed elsewhere on this site).
Ship Class
The
Yalen class, led by Severodvinsk (K-560), was laid on 21 December 1993 and launched on 15 June 2010. She was commissioned into the Russian Navy (Northern Fleet) on December 30. In 2013, it was the only ship in the group built to the standards of the former 885 project. Kazan (K-561) is scheduled to enter service sometime in 2018 and is the first of the (modernization) project 885M ships.
It was followed by Novosibirsk (K-573), Krasnoyarsk (K-571), Arkhangelsk (K-564), Perm and Ulyanovsk - after or sometime in 2023 or later.
Tour
The shape of the boat is traditional, like a submarine: the sails are well integrated into the front midback vertebrae, and the bow is rounded to allow depth penetration. The rear of the fuselage tapers to where a single multi-blade propeller shaft is located.
The cruciform plane pattern provides the necessary control for the boat, while the dive plane is located at the front of the fuselage, just ahead and below the sail position. On top of the sail is the usual combination of sensors and communications arrays.
Internal
There are 64 ratings on board. A 'spy pair' unit serves as the vessel's primary surface search system, and the sonar is an MGK-600 'Irtysh-Amfora' unit. The complete CounterMeasures (CM) suite supports survivability, with basic noise reduction and stealth built into the design wherever possible. Power comes from a single Gen 4 KPM pressurized water nuclear reactor, giving the vessel unlimited range (basically limited only by crew fatigue and available food supplies).
Kaluga Turbine Works developed the steam turbine used in the course. Rated to last up to 30 years without refueling, the powerplant has a top speed of 20 knots on the water, but increases to an impressive 28 knots underwater.
The hull has been tested to a depth of 600 meters (2,000 feet) and is widely regarded as one of the quietest submarines in the world - in line with some of the ships available in the West.
Dimensions include 458ft barrel length and 50ft width. The ship displaces 8,600 tons when surfaced and 13,800 tons underwater.
Project 885/Project 885M Standards
The course is built on two slightly different standards called Project 885 and Project 885M (Modernized/Modified). Weapons are mainly differentiated between the two designs, the Type 885 has an 8-unit Vertical Launch System (VLS) and 10 torpedo tubes (split between 8 x 650mm tubes and 2 533mm tubes), which the Type 885 will receive An extended 10-cell VLS bay, but with only 8 x torpedo tubes installed (arranged as 6 x 650mm and 2 x 533mm tubes).
Other capabilities of the two design criteria include the ability to disperse mines.
Armed
This armor support is at the heart of attack submarines such as the Yasen class: these submarines are armed with ground-to-surface/surface-to-fire-launch "Oniks", "Kalibr-PL" and "Kh-101"-attack missiles , giving the vessel a strong range below the water's surface. The Kalibr family of missiles is particularly important because it has been successfully used by the Russians in the ongoing Syrian civil war (since 2011), traversing the airspace of all countries in the Middle East to reach their targets.
Cost
However, such potency and performance comes at a price, and the unit price is a limiting factor for the class, at around $1 for a single example. $5 to $3. $5 billion. More advanced ships like the U.S. Navy's Seawolf class have encountered similar problems, of which only three are in service.
