History of Severomorsk (619) / (Project 619)

During the decades of the Cold War, the Soviet Navy was forced to keep pace with developments in the West, especially the growing capabilities of American submarines. This has resulted in a new type of surface combatant - the "Udaloy class" - specifically designed to counter submarine threats through a variety of onboard measures. Original plans called for 15 of these ships, but this ended with the completion of 13 ships, as two of them were eventually cancelled. The Soviet Union ceased to exist in 1991 and the ships were incorporated into the new Russian Navy.

Four Udaloy-class ships have since been retired (2015), and the more advanced version has become the Udaloy II, offering significantly enhanced capabilities through three-man batches of ships.

The Severomorsk (Type 619) is an original Udaloy I class ship, laid on 12 June 1984. She was launched on December 24, 1985, and officially commissioned on December 30. 1987 - since then in service with the Russian-Soviet Northern Fleet.

Classified as an anti-submarine warfare (ASW) destroyer, the ship retains inherent anti-ship (AS) capabilities. Her primary armament is a missile pack containing 2 x 4 (8) SS-N-14 "Silex" anti-submarine/anti-ship missile launchers and 8 x 8 (64) SA-N-9 "Gauntlet" surface-to-vertical Airborne missiles in the launch system (VLS). More conventional weapons can be seen with 2 x 100mm/70 caliber dual-purpose cannons and 4 x 30mm Ak-630 Close-In Weapon System (CIWS).

Completing the armament are 2 x 4 (8) 553mm torpedo tubes (launching torpedoes or SS-N-15 missiles).

Severomorsk has a silhouette based on early Russian design qualities. Her bow profile is markedly raised, and these lines pass through the midship funnel. Her "A" and "B" positions are occupied by two turret-mounted deck guns, while aft is one of two VLS packs (embedded in the forward part of the hull superstructure). The second is set in front of the helicopter pylon towards the stern.

The bridge is firmly integrated into the fuselage structure and is low overall. Two Silex missile launchers are located on the port and starboard sides of the bridge, which is topped by a short pyramid-shaped pylon on which the Kite Scream radar unit is located. The twin pipes located near the midship are arranged side by side.

The boat has two lattice masts (one forward and one aft) and the rear structure is higher than the front. The aerial search antenna is located on the rear structure. Her stern section is reserved for the helideck to support 2 x Kamov Ka-27 "Helix" (or similar) naval helicopters. Comprehensive aviation services are provided through a hangar in the superstructure aft of the fuselage.

Your crew plus the number 300.

Displacement is 6,930 tonnes under standard load and up to 7,550 tonnes under full load. Dimensions include a length of 535 feet, a beam of 63 feet and a draft of up to 20 feet. Her machine consists of 4 gas turbines, outputting 120,000 hp through a COGAG (Combined Gas and Gas) unit, increasing efficiency depending on cruising or sprinting maneuvers.

Under ideal conditions, it can reach a top speed of 35 knots and a range of 10,500 nautical miles.

As of 2015, Severomorsk remains active in the Russian fleet.
