TCG Bayraktar (L-402) History
The Bayraktar class DropShip (Tanks) serving the Turkish Navy consists of two complete battleships, TCG Bayraktar (L-402) and TCG Sancaktar (L-403). The pair served in amphibious assault support roles, dedicated to assisting in the transport and delivery of personnel, machinery and supplies from ship to shore.
The class was constructed from 2014 to 2018 and opened in 2017. Both were built in Turkish waters by Anadolu Shipyards with strong support from local industry.
The contract for the TCG Bayraktar (L-402) highlighted in this article was awarded in June 2011 and its keel was laid in May 2014. The ship was launched for testing in October 2015 and officially entered service with the Turkish Navy on April 14, 2017.
At the time of writing (2019), she is still in service.
The vessel has a full-load displacement of 7,400 tons, an overall length of 455.2 feet, and a beam of 64.3 feet. Propulsion comes from 4 x 3,860 hp marine diesel engines driving 2 stern shafts, giving the vessel a maximum sea speed of 18 knots and a range of 6,000 nautical miles.
An additional 670 hp bow thruster is used for fine maneuvering.
A crew of 176 will be deployed on board to manage various systems and services. Carry up to 1,200 tons of cargo, including 4 shipboard LCVP landing craft. In addition, it can carry up to 486 combatants. Installed systems include Thales Smart-S Mk. 2 surface search radar, LPI X-band radar and 2 x Sperry Marine "VisionMaster" FT S-band navigation aids.
Electronic warfare is provided by the Mark 36 Series SRBOC kit and 2 Ultra Electronics Sea Sentor "Surface Ship Torpedo Defense" (SSTD) systems. ASELSAN offers Laser Warning Receiver (LWR) functionality as well as the ASELFLIR-300D Electro-Optical (EO) Targeting System.
It is also responsible for the ARES-2N's ECM (Electronic Countermeasures) suite, which is critical to the ship's survival.
The weapon is purely self-defense in nature, commanded by 2 x Leonardo (formerly OTO-Melara) 40mm "Fast 40" automatic cannons. Close range defense is provided by a digital 2 x 20mm phalanx weapon system.
In addition, there is a 2 x 12.7mm machine gun armed "STAMP" Remote Weapon Station (RWS) developed by ASELSAN.
The vessel's profile includes a raised bow with good offshore cutting capabilities (hull class up to sea state 6), a foredeck cargo section providing access to the lower deck, mid-section of the LCVP installation area, bridge superstructures Helipads at midship and stern. The helipad can operate a medium or heavy helicopter to further support naval forces reaching shore.
In addition to its obvious military value, TCG Bayraktar provides adequate service facilities and housing to assist/assist major humanitarian events.
