History of USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69)
The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower is the second of ten ships in the Nimitz-class U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carrier fleet currently in service with the U.S. Navy.
At the time of her creation, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower became the second Nimitz-class carrier after USS Nimitz (CVN-68) and was ahead of the rest - her sister ship (with Nimitz) USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70), USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71), USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72), USS George Washington (CVN-73), USS John C. Stennis (CVN -74), USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75), USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76) and USS George HW Bush (CVN-77). Together, they represent the most powerful surface fleet on the planet, giving the U.S.
Navy an unparalleled advantage in responding to threats against U.S. allies and interests. After the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower was ordered by the U.S. government (originally ordered as "USS Eisenhower"), its construction was assigned to the Newport News Shipyard in Virginia. Her keel was lowered on August 15, 1970, followed by a launch on October 11, 1975. She officially entered service on October 18, 1977, and was assigned to her homeport at Naval Station Norfolk (NS), Virginia, on the east coast of the United States.
She fights under the motto "I Like Ike" and wears a five-star badge that shows a front view of the center of the boat. During her active tenure, Eisenhower received numerous USN awards for outstanding efficiency and exemplary participation in activism in the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and 2010s.
The aircraft carrier USS Dwight Eisenhower was named after Dwight David Eisenhower - nicknamed "Ike", after former US President and famous WWII Allied Commander (General) Dwight Eisenhower. Eisenhower served as President of the United States from 1953 to 1961 after World War II, becoming the 34th President of the United States.
In his farewell speech on January 17, 1961, the outgoing president warned of the dangers of undue power and military spending in America's "military industrial complex." Ironically, upon completion and subsequent life extension, the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower cost billions of dollars.
Overall, the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower followed the design pattern established by the major aircraft carrier USS Nimitz. Her upper deck (flight deck) is mostly flat and is used for storage, launch and retrieval of various types of fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft, with the exception of the island superstructure offset to starboard aft midship.
There are various communications and sensor equipment on the island, as well as bridge and flight controls. A mast was placed on the island and a shorter mast was installed at the rear of the island. The flight deck was granted with four large powered hangar lifts for launching and recovering a steady stream of aircraft during combat and maneuvers. The recovery area is part of the flight deck, from starboard stern to port bow (9 degrees from centerline), allowing the clearance required to access the aircraft from the protruding island superstructure. The plane was launched by four steam-powered catapults - two near the forecastle and the remaining two along the port side.
Using this configuration (called CATOBAR = "Catapult Assisted Takeoff Obstacle Arrested Recovery"), up to four aircraft can be launched simultaneously while allowing recovery of one aircraft (assisted by four arrester wires). The two catapult lines on the port side intersect at the launch end, meaning that the two aircraft cannot be fired at the same time (unlike the foredeck catapult lines, which are relatively parallel). The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower had a displacement of 114,000 tons, a barrel length (from bow to stern) of 1,092 feet, a beam of 252 feet, and a draft of 37 feet.
Sensors and processing are handled by a range of systems, including multiple air search radars, target acquisition radars, traffic control radars, navigation aids and landing support radars. The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower's crew consists of 3,200 officers, marines and sailors, with an additional 2,480 personnel making up her air wing, for a total of 5,680 on board.
As a nuclear powered aircraft carrier, the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower is equipped with 2 x Westinghouse A4W nuclear reactors and 4 x steam turbines with listed shaft power of 260,000 hp and drives 4 x propeller shafts in the stern. This arrangement gives the vessel a maximum speed at sea of ??30 knots under ideal conditions.
Due to the nature of nuclear power, the ship's range is essentially unlimited, with each reactor having a lifespan of decades or more before it needs to be replaced. As a result, U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carriers canand are often calledto waters around the world.
Ships like the great USS Dwight D. Eisenhower rely on networks that support surface ships to defend themselves against land and sea attack (including enemy submarines). However, as a last line of defense, Eisenhower was armed with the Sea Sparrow medium-range surface-to-air missile (a naval land-launched version of the successful Sparrow air-to-air missile). In addition, three digitally controlled 20mm phalanx revolving gun systems were installed for close range defense as an alternative to the RIM-116 series of rolling fuselage missile launchers. The USS Eisenhower also has a number of electronic countermeasures devices, including the SLQ-32A(V)4 system and the SLQ-25A series of "Nixie" torpedo decoys.
As a last line of defense, the ship is protected by up to 64mm of armor. In sum, an enemy aircraft or missile must successfully pass the network of supporting ships accompanying the squadron and Eisenhower's point defense capabilities before it can successfully hit the carrier.
The wings of the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower consisted of 85 to 90 fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft. The inventory includes their anti-aircraft fighters (which double as attack fighters), specialized fighter jets, transport aircraft and helicopters.
During her first decades of service, the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower stockpiled the famous Grumman F-14 Tomcat rotorcraft until the type was officially retired by the U.S. Navy and replaced by the multi-role F/ A-18 Hornet replaced.
The F/A-18C variant is the primary F/A-18 fighter currently in service, and these are further complemented by the two-seat F/A-18 Super Hornet E and F variants. The Grumman E-2 Hawkeye continues to provide AWAC (Airborne Early Warning and Control) capability, while the Sikorsky SH-60 Seahawk (the naval version of the venerable UH-60 Blackhawk) allows vertical takeoff and landing while facilitating anti-ship defense. Anti-submarine facilities and search and rescue of downed aircraft.

After completing the required sea trials and commissioning (October 1977), the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower was assigned to the U.S. Atlantic Fleet, where she served on a year-long crew exercise. In early 1979, the ship was sent to tour the Mediterranean before returning to US shores in July. The following year, during the Iran hostage crisis, she was deployed to the Persian Gulf, succeeding the USS Nimitz after a failed hostage rescue operation (Operation Eagle Claw). As the accident heightened already escalating tensions in the region, the Eisenhower remained at the station for eight months before being rescued by the aircraft carrier USS Independence (CVA-62).
The Eisenhower was again transferred to Mediterranean waters.
The crew of the aircraft carrier USS Eisenhower then conducted joint exercises with the Egyptian military through Exercise Bright Star in 1983. After the training mission, their planes were used to scout enemy artillery positions in Lebanon for the UN peacekeeping force stationed there. In October 1985, she was sent back to the United States for a planned overhaul of over a year.
During this period, the ship has been equipped with the 20mm Phalanx Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) and Sea Sparrow surface-to-air missiles, while her various defense and communications suites have been upgraded to address modern threats and services. Her overhaul ended in 1987, after which she returned to the station and was sent back to the Mediterranean the following year. Returned to the United States at the end of 1988, became active in 1989, and was dispatched to the Mediterranean in 1990.
She attended D-Day celebrations near Omaha Beach on the Normandy coast of France.
In 1990, Saddam Hussein dispatched his armythen the fourth largest in the worldto invade neighboring Kuwait and its vital oil reserves. This forced a coalition of Western and Middle Eastern nations to defend Kuwait and prompted the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower to take a position in the Red Sea. After the political line failed to root out Hussein's army, military action ensued as coalition forces were used against the dominant Iraqi air force and military in Operation Desert Storm. The Iraqi army was completely defeated and forced to retreat across the Kuwait-Iraq border. After the war, tensions persisted and the U.S. had to have a substantial presence in the region.
The Eisenhower served in the waters of the Persian Gulf from September 1991 before returning to Norfolk Shipyard in April 1992 for overhaul. The overhaul lasted from January to October 1993, and the ship was commissioned in November.
After the Gulf War, the USS Eisenhower participated in the Defence of Democracy off the coast of Haiti. The operation lasted from September 1994 to March 1995, with the expected successful reinstatement of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. The Eisenhower stayed just a month before being called to the Persian Gulf in October 1994 to support Operation Southern Watch -- the enforcement of a "no-fly zone" in southern Iraq.
USS Dwight D. Eisenhower then began another major overhaul in July 1995. This period lasted until January 1997, and she started operations in July 1998.
The deployment proved to be relatively brief, as the vessel returned to dock in December and was ordered to enter another conversion period until it entered service in June of the following year.
In early 2000, Eisenhower was again tasked with enforcing the southern no-fly zone. A major overhaul began in 2001, resulting in significant improvements to the aircraft carrier. Their two nuclear reactors were replaced by brand new units that could run for another 20 to 25 years. However, the ship was not available to the U.S.
Navy until 2005, after which the Eisenhower was activated into operational service in late 2006. After the Iranian navy captured 15 British naval personnel, she made a trip to the Mediterranean and conducted exercises off the coast of Iran before returning to the Gulf.
In April 2007, the USS Nimitz replaced her in this position. British seafarers were held for 13 days before being released by the Iranian government as a "gift to the British".
In February 2009, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower was designated as the flagship of Carrier Strike Group 8 in the Arabian Sea (waters between Somalia and India, southern Oman and the Persian Gulf). From there, she supported operations in the aftermath of 9/11 and the subsequent US-led invasion of Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom) as part of the coalition's fight against the Taliban and Al Qaeda in Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom).
Year 2003. Additional services have also been provided for Somali pirates stationed in the region. In July 2009, Eisenhower returned to the United States for an overhaul.
In January 2010, the Eisenhower was recalled to the waters of the Middle East as flagship. The trip continued until July, when the Eisenhower was called home. Sent on her final mission in June 2012, the Eisenhower is expected to remain in service until around 2020, when Gerald R. Ford's new supercarrier class will enter service.
The Gerald R. Ford class currently includes two named ships - USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) and USS John F. Kennedy (CVN-79) - and one yet to be named ship - CVN. 80. CVN-80 is a ship designed to replace the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower in service with the US aircraft carrier fleet.
