History of USS Elliott (DD-967)

USS Elliott is one of 31 Spruance-class destroyers (no longer in service with the US Navy - USN). One of their last support operations included operations in Operation Enduring Freedom. After more than 30 years of service, the ship was downgraded to target service and sank off the coast of Australia during joint combat exercises, where she would become an artificial reef for the local environment.

The USS Elliot, a conventional Navy ship with a crew of up to 334 in 1977, was later equipped with her Sea Sparrow missile capability and reported for service in 1978.

Power comes from her four General Electric GE LM2500 gas turbines, powering both shafts with 80,000 shaft horsepower and delivering speeds of up to 32 knots. This type of weaponry initially revolves around her dual-purpose 2 x 5" Mark 45 main guns (one in tandem). This will soon be complemented by the addition of her NATO Sea Sparrow missile launcher. Added additional offensive firepower Consists of 2 x 324mm torpedo launchers, Harpoon anti-ship missile launchers and Phalanx CIWS systems, the latter surrounding her main superstructure.

Her profile features are her two main pylons midship. Helicopter near the stern The apron serves 2 x Sikorsky Type SH-60 Seahawk LAMPS III helicopters.

USS Elliott was ordered in 1971, launched in 1973, launched in 1974, and commissioned in 1977. She was named after Lieutenant Arthur Elliott II, who was killed while serving as commander of patrol boat 57 River Squadron in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.
