History of USS New York (LPD-21)

The USS New York is the fifth ship in the San Antonio class and the sixth ship named after this great American city. The San Antonio-class was the U.S. Navy's first amphibious transport dock (LPD), commissioned in 2006. Twelve such systems were eventually planned, and five are now (at the time of writing) in use. The San Antonio-class ships are expected to replace about 40 surface combatants for the U.S.

Navy by the end of the program. USS New York will provide the U.S. Marine Corps with a capable, highly advanced surface combatant to support its various amphibious operations around the world in wartime and peacetime.

Tour USS New York

Like the other ships of the San Antonio class, the silhouette of USS New York consists primarily of her two octagonal pyramid turrets on two superstructures. The bow on the deck curves and tapers sharply to the waterline, while the broad flight deck is clearly visible aft. The hangar door is visible from the flight deck and faces aft.

A large access descent ramp is located above the waterline in the forward part of the stern (below the flight deck). The forward-mounted Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) system is offset to the left of the superstructure directly in front of and below the bridge, while the rear-mounted Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) system is offset to the right of the rear superstructure above the hangar door . A supply crane can be seen with its base on the port side. USS New York's internal stern storage area allows amphibious landing craft to board and disembark via a large stern cargo ramp. Internally, the midship is divided into three separate floors to accommodate appropriate naval amphibious vehicles, among others.

Air elements are stored in the hangar above and run along the reinforced flight deck when needed. The San Antonio class also uses a very unique angular hull shape.

Size and performance

The USS New York has an overall length of 684 feet and a length of 661 feet at the waterline. She has a 105-foot beam gauge and a 97-foot beam gauge on the waterline. Her draft is 23 feet.

Power is provided by 4 sequential turbocharged Cold Pielstick marine diesel engines delivering 41,600 shaft horsepower to both axles. This arrangement allows for a top speed of 22 knots.

Cargo - Hooray

The base crew consists of 332 men and 28 officers. The LDP-21 normally accommodates up to 700 Marines, consisting of 633 enlisted soldiers and 66 officers, but is specified for a maximum of 800 Marines.

Unique to the San Antonio-class surface combatant is the ability to combine the MV-22B Osprey tiltrotor helicopter, Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle (EFV) and Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) family of vehicles on a single vessel. These vehicles represent the primary fast-moving response option required by the U.S. Marine Corps. Thus, USS New York can accommodate 2 LCAC vehicles, 14 EFVs and up to 3 MV-22B Osprey systems (one inside the hangar and up to two operating simultaneously on the flight deck).

Additionally, a Landing Craft Utility (LCU) unit can replace both LCAC systems. USS New York can also accommodate 14 other Amphibious Assault Vehicles (AAVs) for beach attack in the form of the AAVP7 series.

Other land-based vehicles can also be stowed on board, including haul trucks, general purpose Humvees and bulldozers.

The Air Force UH- 1 Iroquois utility helicopter. All of these provide the vital air support needed for any amphibious operation.

Defense

A pair of Bushmaster II 30mm cannons for close range work and a pair of RAM (Rolling Airframe Missile) launchers for fast moving targets protect the ship from potential aerial threats at close range. Each is attached to the bow and stern ends of the boat. The Bushmaster II is a 30mm chain gun made by Minnesota-based Alliant Techsystems, based on the 25mm M242 Bushmaster on the M2 Bradley. Since then, it has become a standardized weapon system on U.S. and foreign military vehicles and aircraft. The RAM system is a sea-based light surface-to-air missile system with infrared homing that entered service in 1992.

The system is primarily used to repel incoming enemy anti-ship cruise missiles. Additional close-in support is provided by multiple Browning M2 12.7mm (0.50 caliber) heavy machine gun emplacements on the front, rear and sides on different deck levels.

USS New York Timeline

On November 25, 2003, Northrop Grumman Marine Systems built the aircraft carrier USS New York. She was launched on September 10, 2004, and on December 20, 2007. The ship was officially named on March 1, 2008 and commissioned on November 7, 2009.

She fights under the motto "Strength Through Sacrifice". Never forget. "The USS New York demonstrated its resilience back in 2005, surviving the epic Hurricane Katrina during its construction in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Background description

Following the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers in New York City on September 11, 2001, New York Governor George E. Pataky issued a formal request to Secretary of the Navy Gordon England for the establishment of a U.S. Navy warship named " New York". As such, LPD-21 was named USS New York, followed by USS Arlington (LPD-24) and USS Somerset (LPD-25), commissioned to honor the victims of the September 11 attack in Arlington.

CDR F. Curtis Jones of the US Navy was the first commander of the USS New York.
