The JL-1 series was designed by Huang Weilu and produced in Factory 307, with a 35-foot fuselage, carrying a 200-300 kiloton nuclear warhead, powered by a solid fuel booster, and flying up to 1700 kilometers (the upgraded JL-1A followed thereafter) range up to 2,500 km). The production of these missiles began in the 1980s, along with the operational Type 092. The Type 092 began performing basic patrol duties in the years following its introduction and, as expected, entered a period of conversions and upgrades during this period. Her original sonar suite was upgraded to a more modern type (of French origin), along with possibly stealth capabilities installed throughout the ship. The original JL-1 ballistic missile was replaced by the JL-1A series with improved range.
Despite these attempts to keep the ship effective in modern times, ideas eventually turned to the development of an entirely new indigenous attack submarine system - the Jin class "Type 094" - which has been replaced by the Type 092 in Chinese Navy service (2010). Although the Type 094 has arrived, the Type 092 is believed to still be in service with the Chinese Navy.
Six Jin-class ships were eventually deployed, leading to issues of lack of transparency from Washington and China.
Type 092 is the only recognized summer class ship. A second hull is believed to have been built sometime in the early 1980s and possibly launched, but was later lost in an accident, possibly in 1985. However, this detail has yet to be confirmed.
